Corus Chess Round 10 Press ConferenceIt wasn’t the most convincing victory of his career, but still Vishy Anand was reasonably happy with it, after nine consecutive draws in Wijk aan Zee. The World Champion explains his victory against tournament leader Alexei Shirov. Enjoy!

That’s what happens when you play with fire, one day your fingers gets burned

Anand’s commentary was the worst after his win against Shirov, even embarrassing. This is the world champion, a 2100 could have given better analysis, not to mention dressed like he came out of TJ Maxx. He explanations consisted of ; well I don’t know what I was thinking or I guess there was something there?????? This is suppose to be a chess genius??? I play poker and have would have been booed off the stage with that kind of pure crraappppppppppppp.

LOL …. look at Anand how did he show the opening …. fantastic.
He got bored if he showed the (right) opening.

How come most chesswomen and women of chessplayers are as ugly as hell?

(One exception is Katja Lahno, after she got rid of her moustache…)

  6. Remco G on January 29th, 2010 16:00

That is because most people are ugly as hell.

Bullogs, i know a lot of beautiful women. The funny thing is they almost never play chess, nor are married to chessplaying men…

  8. jan van der marel on January 29th, 2010 20:20

My own wife is an exception to the rule, of course…

“How come most chesswomen and women of chessplayers are as ugly as hell?”

Have you looked at some of the male chess players?
Of course I’m sure you are an exception there as well.

This is unbelievable. Maybe he is sick or something? Worst analyses I have seen by a GM. Hope he will wake up soon.

wow this is bad…. I hope Anand does beat Topalov but after watching this i’m not sure I would bet on him anymore.

  12. test on January 30th, 2010 06:44

Concluding from this game demonstration that he does not have good chances against Topalov seems extremely far fetched, to say the least.

He didn’t go into much detail, but that’s most likely because Anand was not really happy with this game, he probably also presumes more chess understanding than many viewers actually possess.

(When I hear him talk in the demonstration it seems to me like he’s in very good shape, strange as that may seem considering his standing in the tournament and the fact that he was outplayed for most of this game, maybe I’m hallucinating.)

He had a lost position at some point; so what? It’s not like Shirov is a patzer. His mediocre result so far (for Anand) is entirely due to his upcoming match with Topalov. Kramnik suffered a similar fate and had mediocre results when he was involved with matches. Anand does not seem to want to admit it, but my guess is that he just does not want to seem like he’s looking for excuses. (And also don’t forget that he’s being payed a nice amount just for showing up.)

What a disgrace. I’ve always been a fan of Anand and am really disappointed in every aspect of his 2010 Corus. He shouldn’t have bothered showing up to this tournament and should get fined some of his prize money and appearance fee imo.

He is on 4th place. What a disgrace! :)

    LOL

  15. mike on January 30th, 2010 21:12

Yes, maybe Anand is not gifted as a chess oralist, but he is gifted as a top chess professional, a “monster calculator” and, eventually, the World Chess Champion…By the way: Take a look at today’s game Anand vs. Kramnik…

  16. Thomas on January 30th, 2010 21:25

I think Anand simply considered his game against Shirov “nothing special”, hence not worth much comment. Wouldn’t it have been stranger if he had said “this feels like one of the best games I ever played”, continuing in “Kramnik’s press conference style”!? :)

In due course, we will see what Anand has to say about his win against the same Kramnik – unless Smeets is invited this time (he also played a nice game today, but it was only relevant for the “Dutch final standings”).

  17. mike on January 30th, 2010 22:20

Ironically, Anand today’s win also displayed the superiority of the Bishop against the Rook when supporting a set of strong connected pawns…Yesterday’s Kramnik poison had been used against himself today…

  18. Jackson Brown on January 30th, 2010 23:39

Yes a wonderful game against Kramnik today, must have been sandbagging for 10 rounds, but he beat the Petroff so good job, now lets see some analysis worthy of Kaspy,Kramnik, Carlsen,or someone over 2100 please.
