Russian Championship Super Final takes off in Moscow

Russian Championship Super Final

Today the Russian Championship Superfinal started in Moscow, Russia. The first round immediately saw the top pairing Grischuk-Karjakin; this game ended in a draw. Evgeny Alekseev and Dmitry Andreikin started with wins, beating Nikita Vitiugov and Vladimir Potkin respectively. In the women's section only Tatiana Kosintseva won her first game.

The 65th Russian Championship, Superfinal for men and women started today in the Radisson Slavinskaya hotel in Moscow. Peter Svidler will surely try to keep his title and win his seventh championship. Other favorites are of course Sergey Karjakin, as the highest rated player, and reigning Blitz World Champion Alexander Grischuk.

It will also be interesting to follow Daniil Dubov's tournament. The 16-year-old grandmaster dominated the Higher League and is playing his first Superfinal. In the women's section Valentina Gunina is the title holder.

For the men's section, allowed to participate are players who qualified from the Higher League, players who finished 1-3 at last year's Superfinal and the two players with the highest Elo rating on July 1st, 2012. For the women's section the qualifying procedure was a bit more complicated.

Here are the games of the first round for replay. Note that in this tournament draw offers before move 40 (!) are not allowed.

Is this in force only for the final? Game #10 ended in 11 moves.

Draw offers aren't allowed but draw claims are - or should the ladies keep repeating moves until move 40? I am pretty sure that at least one more game in the women's event will be drawn before move 40.

Very sorry to see Vitiugov's troubles as of late. His games are very pleasing and his style unique. I hope he fairs better in the future.

Agreed. His loss against Alekseev was pretty unfortunate, there must have been a mate with the white king so close to blacks Q N and pawn.

How unlucky Vitiugov was to throw away a whole point in a few moves: 80...Qe3+ would have won on the spot. Six moves later he lost his advantage and on move 88 he threw away the draw...
