It's unique in the long history of Corus, and possibly in any big round robin event: with one round to go, no less than six players share the lead with 7 points out of 12 games: Aronian, Carlsen, Dominguez, Karjakin, Movsesian and Radjabov. In the last round, which will start at 12:30 CET tomorrow, everything will be decided.
What was theoretically possible before the start of the penultimate round has become a reality: the four leaders Aronian, Dominguez, Movsesian and Radjabov drew their games while their closest rivals Carlsen and Karjakin, half a point behind them, won. Before we look at today's round, let's first answer the question that will be on everyone's mind. The prize fund (1. € 10,000 2. € 7,000 3. 3,500 4. 2,500 5. 2,000 6. 1,500) is always divided among shared winners, but there can only be one winner (who will be the first qualifier for the 2nd Grand Slam in Bilbao later this year). So how will this be decided? Well, the tiebreak rules are:
1. head-to-head game(s)
2. Sonneborn-Berger points
3. number of Black games
Tomorrow's round has Kamsky-Movsesian, Dominguez-Karjakin, Smeets-Aronian, Wang Yue-Carlsen and Radjabov-Stellwagen so we should probably consider Radjabov as a slight favorite here. That half a point against Smeets could become highly valuable!
The first winner of the day was Karjakin, who was well prepared for Adams' novelty 15...exd4. "After 20.b4 I already have a big advantage," he said after the game. Black's pieces on the queenside got terribly clustered and in the end White's bishop pair and passed pawn were far too much to handle for Black.
Carlsen and Smeets followed a recent game between Ivanchuk and Topalov but with 11.Bd3 the Norwegian got "a position where you can play, which was what I wanted today", he said at the press conference. 17...Bg7 surprised him because "even if the attack won't be decisive I'll always have a pleasant positional advantage." As always, more details will be available in the video!
Of today's draws, Aronian-Morozevich was by far the best. 12...c5!? was a deviation from an old Sosonko game and although it looked better for White, Black was probably doing fine all the time. With 31...Qc5 and 34...h4 he could have posed some problems for White, but in the end it was a dynamically balanced position.
With one round to go, Short finally had to allow one player to join him in the lead. Kasimdzhanov beat l'Ami in a complex game while the Englishman drew with Efimenko. The other player on half a point, Caruana, surprisingly drew his game in eleven moves today. Perhaps he wanted to start preparing for his last-rounder against Short. Kasimdzhanov has Black against Motylev tomorrow.
In the C group things are more or less decided already. In their crucial encounter, So beat Hillarp Persson and the Phillipine is now a point clear of Anish Giri, who won again (against Leon Hoyos). But... who knows. So has Howell as an opponent, so it's not so easy. By the way, amazingly, there were no draws in this round again, while yesterday only one game ended peacefully in C. The drawing percentage there is a mere 27%!

I'm watching the games round 13 live. I think Dominguez has got a strong position probably wining after 23.Bd3 or even after 24.b4. It was then necessary to act rapidly because the position was complicated, not to check mat in short term but to win in the end game with probably one piece up against one some pawns, and Karjakin was very conscious of the position and he was gambling very well..!
After 24.....Qb6 for example, it seems it was urgent do kill the Black's defending Bishop at g6, for example: 25.Bxg6..fxg6 26.O-O-O...Qxb4 27.Qxg6...Qb2+ 28.Kd2...Rfd2+ 29.Ke2...Rxd1 30.Rxd1 and now White would have a big advantage because the Black's knight and bishop are pined, the black queen has no where to go and the Black's rook has no column to play.
It seems Dominguez managed to find a wining position again, but this time the position was much more complicated and he probably was in time trouble...
A really dramatic decisive game..! Congrats to Karjakin stubborn defense and agile grasp of his wining chances!!!

It's all because of Kasparov, after his retirement there is no clear no. 1, and so you have now 6 tied for first.. But maybe this is way is better, you have more competition.

Atila, are you sure that is not clear who is number 1 now??? Check the ELO table on the right column and you will understand...
Abour 6 players on the top in Corus... This is because the top 2 players doesn't participate. I think that if Topalov or Anand was participate the situation on the top will be different....

it does seem like Radjabov has a good shot at claiming first prize. Carlsen does have a fair chance as well, if he wins (though unlikely) he wins and if he draws and everyone else draws he wins (and well, draws happen!). Then I think Dominguez and Karjakin has some chances because both will try to win that game, so its likely that it wont end in a draw at least.
I feel sorry for Tiger who just blew his otherwise faboulous tournament last two rounds. still he has shown great chess, hope he wins in the last round to finish at a top place at least!

What about this one? All leaders lose in the last round - hence Kamsky wins against Movsesian and 7/13 is good enough for shared 1st (to 7th) place.
Ah no, it's not possible, because Karjakin and Dominguez play each other ... .
Only two last-round games will NOT affect the result for 1st place, including Morozevich-Ivanchuk !

It will be easy win for Aronian tomorrow. Not sure about Radjabov - Stellwagen. Radjabov is always weak playing white, so I guess there will be a draw, just like in Wang-Carlsen, Kamsky-Movsesian, Dominguez-Karjakin.

this tournament looks weird with so many tied up for first after 12 rounds ... last few years it seems to be a recurring scheme at Corus, since 2005 there is always more than one winner ... wonder why that happens

"That half a point against Smeets could become highly valuable!"
Again and again sand into one's eyes!
The "half a point agains Smeets" is a LOST half a point.

Radjabov HAS MORE CHANCES TO BE FIRST.
I wish Dominguez to win.
It will be a Great Last Round.

Looks like Carlsen has the best tie-break. I hope he wins tomorrow.
