Voor Loek een betere start dan in Foros. Met zwart remise tegen Chucky is een mooie opsteker!

A terrible chess by Van Wely in the second round.

The position after 19... Rfc8 in S. Mamedyarov - P. Leko has been analysed by J. Aagaard in his book "Practical Chess Defense" (2006) on page 41: He gives 20. 0-0-0!! (his signs) with the idea 20... Ba6 21. Ne7+ Kf8 22.Nxc8+ Qxc5 23. Rd8#.

And after 20... Qxc6 21. Rd8+ Rxd8 22. Qxc6 Bxg2 23. Rd1 Rdc8 24. Qa6 Bxf3 25. Rd7 Bxe4 26. Kd2 "White has great winning chances".

The second exclamation mark might have been assigned by the author because long castle is more precise than 20. Rd1 as in the second line 23. Td1 would not have been possible with the king on e1.

Consequently in his commentary of Cox,J-Aagaard,J (2005) , where 20. Rxf1 was played, 16...Nc6 gets an "?" by the author.

Gustafsson and Kramnik churn out 29 moves of theory and agree a draw? Lol

What next? A 36 move draw with no new moves played?

Just joking :)

Interesting comment Norbert, thanks for posting it up. I wonder if the SuperGMs would evaluate that endgame differently to Aagaard?
