Sutovsky on a roll in Antwerp

Emil SutovskyEmil Sutovsky leads the Inventi Chess tournament in Antwerp, Belgium with a fine score of 5 out of 6 and a 2879 performance rating. The Israeli grandmaster is half a point ahead of Etienne Bacrot. With two points, local hero IM Bart Michiels is stil doing a lot better than David Howell's dreadful 0.5 out of 6.

The 2nd Inventi Chess Tournament takes place September 18-26 at the Inventi training center, a hundred meters away from the city hall in the historical center of Antwerp, Belgium. It's a 10-player round robin with GM Etienne Bacrot (2709), GM Emil Sutovsky (2676), GM Gabriel Sargissian (2668), GM Krishnan Sasikiran (2661), GM Bartosz Socko (2637), GM David Howell (2624), GM Jan Timman (2588), IM Anna Muzychuk (2533), Antoaneta Stefanova (2527) and IM Bart Michiels (2462).

Because of the Karpov-Kasparov match we lack the time for a big report right now, but hopefully we can make it up later. For now, we can tell you that the interesting mixture of players has led to a very fightful tournament, which after 6 rounds has a drawing percentage as low as 44%. In recent times Emil Sutovsky has been mostly in the news in the role of Gata Kamsky's second and manager, but in Antwerp he's proving that when he's on a roll, he can play at top level himself. We haven't heard anything about David Howell being ill or whatsoever, so his terrible result so far must be because of a complete lack of form.

It's Round 6 Standings instead of Round 7 Standings.

Oops, corrected, thx.

Should probably read 'Israeli Grandmaster' not 'Israelian...'

One remarkable think: the Spanish four Knights-opening (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bb5) is played in the first seven round already six times. White scored +2 =4 Not bad at all!
Black answered with 4...Bb4 (3x), 4...Nd4 (1x) and the SOS 4...Bd6 (2x)

nice to see Bart Michiels perform well at this level. Used to play him a lot in the youth tournaments back in the old days. I lost 95% of those games:)....
