Tamir Nabaty wins Israel Championship

Tamir Nabaty won the Championship of Israel, scoring 6.5/9 in what was a Swiss tournament. GMs Ilya Smirin and Viktor Mikhalevski tied for second place with 6.9. WIM Olga Vasiliev won the women's section with 7/9.

The Israel Championship took place April 6th-14th at the Palm Beach Hotel in Acre, Israel. Acre (or Akko), situated at the northern extremity of Haifa Bay, was one of this region’s important cities in ancient times. It was captured by the Crusaders captured and the Ottomans lived there for many centuries. Even Napoleon Bonaparte tried to to take control of the city, in 1799, but failed!

The top Israeli players in this year's national championship were Ilya Smirin, Maxim Rodshtein, Evgeny Postny, Michael Roiz, Vitali Golod and Boris Avrukh. It was 7th seed Tamir Nabaty (2564), however, who took the title. He finished on 6.5/9 which was half a point more than Ilya Smirin and Viktor Mikhalevski. WIM Olga Vasiliev won the women's section with 7/9.

There's the tournament website and a an English website covering the event. Aleksander Nesterovsky made the following video:

Below are the games by Nabaty. Especially his draw with Nathan Birnboim is highly recommended!
