Last weekend Veselin Topalov won a strong rapid tournament in the Spanish town of Villarrobledo. The Bulgarian scored 8/9 and finished half a point clear of Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Participants included Ponomariov, Shirov, Ljubojevic, Van Wely and Dreev.

The tournament was played over the weekend of August 2-3 in Villarrobledo, a town about 100 km northwest of Albacete, in the heart of the La Mancha region. Although this rapid weekender might have escaped the attention of some, it's quite famous in Spain. Among its participants in previous years are famous grandmasters such as Karpov, Timman, Anand and Kramnik.

This year the event was held for the 23rd time already - one of the longest traditions in chess-loving Spain. The rate of play was 20 minutes per game per player, plus three seconds increment per move. Topalov's first prize was, besides the trophy, 3,000 Euros.
