Youth triumphs at Corus 2009

Karjakin-AdamsIn a sensational last-round fight at Corus, all three main groups were won by youngsters: Ukrainian Sergey Karjakin (who just turned 19) ended clear first in Group A after another tough opposite-castlings fight against Leinier Dominguez. In Group B, young Italian top player Fabio Caruana (16) profited from some rare kind of self-destructiveness by good old Nigel Short and finished clear first as well. Wesley So (15) from the Phillipines reigned supreme in Group C, finishing a point ahead of Anish Giri (14) and Tiger Hillarp Persson. Full report.

It was a remarkable last round of a remarkable tournament. Without Anand, Kramnik and Topalov playing, there was clearly less interest in the tournament than is normally the case (the official website couldn’t get near to last year’s number of visitors, which was stimulated even more by the death of Fischer and the Cheparinov-Short incident) but because of the very exciting last weekend, with no less than six players having a serious chance to win the tournament, the 2009 edition of the Corus Chess Tournament had its usual great finish.

Karjakin became the sole and deserved winner, after such a wonderful last-round game in which he managed to beat Dominguez with the black pieces, while Radjabov didn’t get any advantage with White against a solid Stellwagen and Aronian and Movsesian drew realtively quickly against Smeets and Kamsky respectively. Carlsen even lost, his first in the tournament, to Wang Yue, who played better in the endgame phase and ended the game with the pretty 61.f6!. And so, with six players sharing first place after the penultimate round, the Corus Chess Tournament had only one winner, for the first time since 2005, when Leko finished 8.5/13 ahead of Anand (8) and Topalov (7.5).

The B group was decided almost at the same time when Carlsen resigned his game, and it was an even more dramatic affair. Short, who had been leading the standings throughout the tournament, blundered several times against Caruana, first giving away the win and then also overlooking a perpetual check. The Englishman was deeply disappointed but got his act together and luckily, we saw him laughing again at the closing dinner/cocktail party. But he didn’t wake up as a happy man, that’s for sure.

His opponent Caruana must be very happy now, since he accomplished the amazing streak of promoting from C to B, and immediatly from B to A! While it would have been great to see former winner Short getting back to the top tournament, it wil also be very interesting to see what Caruana will be able to show in a year from now.

A quick draw between the top seeded players Howell and So decided the C group already after a few hours. Phillippino So convincingly took first place and will be a worthy B participant next year. Amazingly, he doesn’t work with a coach and has mainly learnt chess by using the computer. And in a way the three winners do have this in common: they’re examples of the new generation of chess players who are all focusing on opening preparation with the computer, and sharp calculation behind the board.

Here’s a collection of photos from yesterday. Your editor-in-chief will start working on the last two videos now!

Chessbase is really insulting Karjakin with they cover picture(English version), and showing how biased and unprofessional they can be.
What can this kid have done to them?
I hope they correct this soon , is embarrassing.
Now i know why they cannot afford to have an open forum like here.

Cangrats on a great coverage of the event.

  2. CAL|Daniel on February 2nd, 2009 01:27

I just keep crying for Nigel Short.

  3. Manu on February 2nd, 2009 01:41

Short needs to cook the bear AFTER he kills it.
I will be very glad to see Caruana in the A group next year.

  4. leigh on February 2nd, 2009 01:53

look at Hou, Yifan, a 14-year-old girl, she beat 3 GMs, and tied 6 games. What a wonderful job!

if she had right strategy at beginning stage, she would get better achievement.

  5. Castro on February 2nd, 2009 02:14

Very good tournament and a fabulous win for Karjakin, I think the strongest field he beat in his carreer so far. Does anyone assure me that?

  6. Castro on February 2nd, 2009 02:17

Oh and nice to see you Manu let me express here. Parheaps you could yourself feed my starving fish also, as you were so concerned ;-)

  7. Michel83 on February 2nd, 2009 02:25

    @ leight

And have a look at her game against Caruana.
She HAD to win it. She missed the most logical moves. Without her being so nice Caruana wouldn’t have won the group. ;)

    So yeah: Go Yifan!

  8. nep on February 2nd, 2009 05:33

    @Manu:

what is wrong with Karjakin picture at Chessbase?

  9. Manu on February 2nd, 2009 06:04

They initial report of the round had a picture of empty chair of Corus instead of a picture of Sergey , they changed it now.
In my opinion that was disrespectful or at list of very duvious taste (not to put a picture of the winner, since they usually do).
They also drop a comment about Carlsen overshadowing Karjiakin too (in this years) , which is IMHO very bad oriented because everybody develops in different ways .
Karjakin (or Magnus , or Caruana or any young player ) should not receive such preassure or bad oriented comparisons from the media.
It is not a race , it is a path , different for everyone.

  10. jussu on February 2nd, 2009 09:34

Too bad Short didn’t win, but given that, I’m glad it was Caruana.
How can we be sure that Chessbase’s current cover picture is not insulting? I mean’s, Karjakin’t tie is not perfectly centered, for example. When one searches for insults very carefully, one can find them anywhere.

  11. christos (greece) on February 2nd, 2009 09:56

Karjakin’s King’s path to safety Kg8-g7-f6!-e6!-d7-e8-f8 and Kf7 (final move) was very impressive and unusual.

  12. Manu on February 2nd, 2009 10:18

    @jussu :
All i can say is that its not the first time they do something like this , and i am not the first one to notice.
So im not just paranoid , im being folowed.
    :)

  13. xtra on February 2nd, 2009 10:24

nice to see Karjakin take down a big one, he has deserved it!

  14. jan van der marel on February 2nd, 2009 11:25

It speaks for Caruana that he doesn’t wear a tie, like a real chess player should do.

  15. jan van der marel on February 2nd, 2009 11:26

Why are all these chess players wearing ties? What kind of nonsense is that?

  16. Sergio on February 2nd, 2009 12:43

Thank you chessvibes for the great coverage again.

  17. Ron on February 2nd, 2009 13:19

Congratulations Sergei. All focus is on Magnus but experts know you are better!

  18. Kabayan on February 2nd, 2009 13:43

    Mabuhay ka WESLEY SO..

  19. patj on February 2nd, 2009 14:02

    really great, exciting tourney.
many new young players to watch out for!
    congrats karjakin!

  20. Jovan on February 2nd, 2009 14:40

ChessVibes’ website is a far better than the official Corus website because it published the result of much touted Carlsen being defeated by Wang Yue. Is there a favoritism on the Corus official site?

  21. Short Fan on February 2nd, 2009 16:17

I most enjoyed the great NIGEL SHORT, he played great chess for example defeating reinderman in a Ruy Lopez Exchange with black and as always some great classic e4 games as against L’ami and games in the QGD tartakovers , Also he fought very long in every game, pity his collapse in the end against Caruana

    NIGEL SHORT 4EVER

O yeah Wesley SO is also really cool great they flew him in from the Filipinnes by the way a beleive Philipine is a real cool Chess Nation Peace!

  22. Angel V on February 2nd, 2009 16:25

Wow… the child prodigy Wesley So is now making himself known (Promil Kid)… He is only popular in the Philippines but now making his presence felt in worldwide stage. I have a feeling he will be well-known throughout the ages after two more years and will dominate chess as what Gary Kasparov has done before :)

  23. randymercado on February 2nd, 2009 17:47

RON, with due respect, I would like to know about the basis of your conclusion that GM karjakin is better than GM CArlsen? The conclusion that a particular chessplayer is better than the other is based on average performance of one during the defined period of time. Example: GM Anand had a dismal performancce in 2008 Bilbao Tournament yet he was able to beat GM Kramnik in their 2008 Bonn WCC? I assume that you fully understood my point.

ANGEL V, Grandmaster Kasparov was an exceptional player. So do GM Wesley So. However, your conclusion that GM So will dominate the chessworld as what GM Kasparov had done in his time is too far-fetching, too sweeping and speculative. None of the present crop of grandmasters has yet shown any iota of evidence that they can even equal what Kasparov had achieved during his time.

  24. suneet on February 2nd, 2009 18:10

    oops…
please check Sasikiran’s room… top seed finished last… feel very sorry for him… is out of 2700 club in online list… sad.

  25. Chessbuff on February 2nd, 2009 19:20

randymercado, let Angel V wax and dream. After all, he’s talking about a 15-yr old who is already a GM and now the winner of Group C. His expectation is as speculative as your denial or refusal. You don’t have an in for the future, do you?

  26. pete on February 2nd, 2009 19:21

very interesting tournament indeed, Karjakin was not the one I was betting on to win but he was clearly better prepared and motivated to win than the others. Some of the glare was missing due to the absence of Topalov, Anand, Kramnik …. and actually I would have loved to see Panomariov too.

Also, what a disasterous performance by Chucky and Morozevich. For Chucky I explain it to myself by the large amount of games he played during 2008 till now, maybe the only player who never rested. But why did Moro played so badly I have no idea.

  27. lulin on February 2nd, 2009 22:18

I know each day there is a best game but I don’t know how to find the list of these best games. Can some one tell me?

    Thanks!

  28. Michael Allard on February 2nd, 2009 23:21

Michael Adams is definitely in a funk and either needs to update his positional style or become more aggressive. Carlsen too seemed to be bored most of this tournament. Maybe it is time for a long break for both of these top players.

  29. Thomas on February 3rd, 2009 00:21

    @lulin:
    http://www.coruschess.com/public_prize.php?year=2009

Hope the link passes through …. .
@Castro: Apparently my last reply to you in another thread is also held back for the time being, so you are not the only one.
@Peter Doggers and colleagues: I am not paranoid, but are there certain rules about when/why posts are posted with a certain delay? Links were mentioned, any words etc. which should rather be avoided?? (My post contained some irony which “a computer” may not understand …)

  30. Mike on February 3rd, 2009 00:59

@lulin If you refer to the expert prize winners, they are here:

    http://www.coruschess.com/public_prize.php?year=2009

As you can see, this year, round four had no award…

You also can check the most interesting (Corus 2009) according to chess theory here:

    http://www.chess-theory.com/encpbo01106_great_tournaments_corus_2009.php

Or you can check Corus Home page —> Upper Menu —> History —> Best and most spectacular

    ;)

  31. Peter Doggers on February 3rd, 2009 08:15

    @Thomas
No rules. Just an overly enthusiastic spam filter.

  32. Thomas on February 3rd, 2009 10:30

Apparently a link to the Corus tournament site is not considered (potentially) spam ,:). Anyway, @lulin (and Mike): Another option is the Game of the Day on chess.fm where you also get video analysis of those games – restricted to ICC members for the first 48 hours, now everything is freely available to everyone.

Their choice sometimes differs from Sokolov’s for the expert price, e.g. they always pick a game from the A group (and they also have one [Morozevich-Adams] for round 4).

  33. chito on February 4th, 2009 15:01

WESLEY SO from the PHILLIPINES,can beat anyone from b and c group… i promise… but he cannot beat his fellow country men KIM STEVEN YAP!!! hehehe, but he is still a champ and were so proud of him…………. god bless

  34. randymercado on February 5th, 2009 07:05

Yes it is admitted that FM Kim Steven Yap had beaten GM Wesley So in a tournament in Cebu City before. If one had beaten the other player only once so far then that is not the conclusive basis that GM So cannot beat FM Yap. Take note that Chito used the phrase “cannot” which can be construed as perpetual.
