Next Friday the first round of the FIDE Candidates tournament will be played, and the winner has the right to challenge World Champion Vishy Anand. After decades of knockout matches, the way to reach that glorious world title match will now be decided in a round robin tournament. The last time this happened was more than half a century ago!

Ukraine has excellent chances to clinch gold at the Women's World Team Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan. After seven of a total of nine rounds, the team led by Kateryna Lagno and Anna Ushenina is 2 match points ahead of China and 3 ahead of Russia, who lost to the USA in round 7.

Russia and Ukraine are in shared first place with four rounds to go at the Women's World Team Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan. In the fifth round China lost ground after losing 1-3 to Ukraine, while Russia was too strong for France: 3.5-0.5. Friday, international Women's Day in many countries, is a rest day at the tournament.

Robert Zelcic won the strong Zagreb Open on Monday. The Croatian grandmaster finished on 8/9 which was a full point more than a group of seven players: Zdenko Kozul, Evgeny Postny, Hrvoje Stevic, Ozren Biti, Miso Cebalo, Ante Brkic and Srdan Sale. The tournament took place February 25-March 4 in Zagreb, Croatia.

Michael Adams won the 20th Bunratty Chess Festival which took place over the weekend at the Bunratty Castle Hotel in Ireland. The English grandmaster won his first five games and then drew in the last round to finish ahead of Nigel Short and Richard Bates.
