Matten: new Dutch literary magazine
10 January 2007 8:00 AM | Last modified: 12:01
There will be a new Dutch literary chess magazine. MATTEN, Schaakverhalen, will be published twice a year. The magazine, which is almost a book by itself, will be about chess and chess culture. MATTEN will focuss on (semi)literary non-fiction, not on chess games or chess technique.
Because the magazine is in the Dutch language, this English version of the article ends here.

Ik ben erg benieuwd of Matten aan zal slaan. Als het een succes wordt, zou het zomaar kunnen dat schaken wat serieuzer genomen wordt in sportland. En niet meer gezien wordt als “dat rare spel van non-communicatieve nerds”.
I presume you’ve looked at the German magazine KARL. How will your magazine be different? Apart from the obvious language differences, of course.
Mm, now I wish I knew a few more words in Dutch than just the numbers one to ten and the word for beer. A lot more, in fact.
Hi Tom, just start your studies now with the traditional sentences “Kijken, kijken, niet kopen” and “Allemachtig achtentachtig!”.
leuk filmpje je denk dat je naar een trailer van een of andere thriller aan het kijken bent maar het is iets over schaken
Well Bert, indeed I am looking, looking not buying.
Give me a clue as to the meaning of almighty eighty-eight, though . . .
Well Tom, the latter one has no clue but is a starter to practice pronunciation. “AllemaGtiG aGtentaGtiG” with its typically Dutch G is very hard to master, so practice, practice, practice!
But who needs pronounciation when reading?
Tom! You won’t be able to understand Dutch if you don’t try to also speak Dutch, think Dutch, maybe even be Dutch!
I actually lived in Holland for three months . . . it’s a little embarrassing I only picked up 11 words! And a few of the swear words too, come to mention it.
I won’t blame you, for eleven words is about the Swedish vocabulary I picked up, when I lived in Stockholm for four months…
Talking about Sweden, when will the new IKEA catalog be available?
