I’ve always found it difficult to take the concept of chess as a team sport very seriously. The U.S.A., arguably the country most obsessed with team sports, didn’t have a national¬†chess team competition until 2005. Makes you wonder, doesn’t?¬†Then there’s the fact that a team sport seems to require by definition, cooperation – which is pretty much the only¬†thing strictly¬†forbidden during a chess game. And without cooperation, what is a team but a¬†random collection of individuals pursuing their own individual goals?

Afgelopen zaterdag werd een Nederlandse schaker tijdens een competitiepartij buiten de speelzaal betrapt met een PDA in zijn hand. Op het schermpje was een schaakstelling zichtbaar. Het bleek dat de actuele stand van de partij door de betreffende speler in PocketFritz was ingevoerd. Zijn partij werd voor hem verloren verklaard en gisteren werd hij er door de competitieleider van de KNSB zwaar voor gestraft: een schorsing tot en met het eind van seizoen 2009-2010.[/lang_nl][lang_en]Last Saturday, while playing a game for his club, a Dutch chess player got caught outside the playing hall, holding a PDA. On the screen, a chess position was visible. It appeared that the player had entered the actual position of the game into PocketFritz. Of het een vloek is of een zege voor de schaaksport is mij steeds minder duidelijk maar feit is dat vrijwel elke schaker in bijna geen ander onderwerp meer ge?ɬØnteresseerd is dan in het viercijferige getalletje achter de naam van de spelers. Daarom vandaag aandacht voor de nieuwe lijst, de FIDE-ratings van juli 2007. De oorspronkelijke lijst van een paar dagen geleden bevatte net als de vorige in april een aantal fouten (onder andere Michael Adams die maar liefst tweemaal op de lijst stond!) maar vandaag is de gecorrigeerde versie gepubliceerd.[/lang_nl][lang_en]Ratings, ratings. It’s more and more unclear to me whether they’re a curse or a blessing but the fact remains that for almost every chess player no subject is more interesting than the four-digit number next to the players’ names. So today we pay some attention to the new list, the FIDE ratings of July 2007. [lang_nl]In de eerste week van februari vernamen we het trieste bericht dat Rik Lith (1954?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú2007) was overleden. Rik was een van de iconen van het Amsterdamse schaak en een van de vaste bezoekers van (ook ‘wijlen’) schaakcaf?ɬ© Gambit. Ruim twee jaar geleden verloor de vriendenkring rondom Gambit binnen korte tijd twee van z’n mooiste diamanten: vaste klant Micha Leuw en Gambit-eigenaar Menashe Goldberg. Zondag 4 februari 2007 voegde Rik Lith zich bij hen, die de laatste jaren steeds meer achteruit ging in gezondheid en slechts 52 jaar werd. Hij is op vrijdag 9 februari op begraafplaats Zorgvlied in Amsterdam begraven. Schaker en politicus Roel van Duijn stelde zijn grafrede ter beschikking aan ChessVibes en samen met Tony Lith zorgde hij voor drie partijen uit Riks goede tijd, waaronder een remise tegen voormalig wereldkampioen Max Euwe.[/lang_nl][lang_en]In the first week of February we received the sad news that Rik Lith (1954?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú2007) had passed away. A bit more than two years ago the circle of friends around Gambit lost two of their brightest diamonds: regular customer Micha Leuw and Gambit owner Menashe Goldberg. Sunday, February 4th, 2007 Rik Lith joined them, whose health had been on the decline in recent years and who only reached the age of 52. On Friday, February 9th, he was buried at the Zorgvlied cemetery in Amsterdam.
