Xu Yuhua wins Nanjing GP tournament

Nana Dzagnidze was leading the standings for most of the tournament, but in the final phase she was caught by Xu Yuhua. The former World Champion from China won the 2nd FIDE Women Grand Prix with a score of 8/11 and a 2619 performance rating. Dzagnide came second, half a point behind the winner and half a point ahead of Zhao Xue. Read more

Like their male Grand Slam colleagues, the Grand Prix women are enjoying their first rest day today and so we take the opportunity to do a first report on this second FIDE GP event. After a 4/4 start, GM Nana Dzagnidze lost her first game in round 5 yesterday, to French GM Marie Sebag, but the Georgian lady is still in clear first place, with six more rounds to go. Read more

In the first round of the Pearl Spring tournament in Nanjing, Magnus Carlsen defeated Peter Leko to grab an early lead. With the white pieces Veselin Topalov couldn’t break through Dmitry Jakovenko’s stubborn defence while Wang Yue and Teimour Radjabov also split the point, in a quiet King’s Indian. Read more

In the 10th round in Jermuk Alekseev and Aronian reduced their gap with the leaders Ivanchuk, Leko and Kasimdzhanov to half a point. Inarkiev finally won a game, against Bacrot. Read more

Leko grabs sole lead after another fightful round in Jermuk

In another exciting round with six decisive games, Peter Leko grabbed sole lead at the Grand Prix in Jermuk. The Hungarian beat Cheparinov with the black pieces while Aronian suffered his second loss, with Black against Eljanov. The other leaders, Kasimdhzanov and Ivanchuk, drew in 20 moves. Read more

After the rest day the Jermuk Grand Prix resumed Saturday with the sixth round, in which Aronian struck back with a win against Gelfand. He joined Leko and Ivanchuk (who was about to lose against Kamsky when he claimed the draw due to the 50-move rule) back in the lead and Kasimdzhanov, who beat Inarkiev, is suddenly on shared first as well. With five decisive games, today’s round of the Grand Prix tournament in Jermuk was even more spectacular than yesterday’s, but a bad one for the local fans.
