Grinding down Caruana in an ending Sunday brought Shirov a second victory . He’s leading Grandmaster Group A as Van Wely was beaten by Nakamura. Carlsen got his first win against Smeets. In B and C there are two young leaders with 2/2: Giri and Robson. Read more

We received lots of positive feedback on our coverage of the Pearl Spring tournament (Nanjing), and this encouraged us to do even better during the Tal Memorial. With Anand, Aronian, Carlsen, Kramnik, Leko, Gelfand, Ivanchuk, Morozevich, Svidler and Ponomariov it’s the strongest tournament of 2009, and it starts tomorrow. For the first time we’ll be providing live IM/GM commentary throughout the tournament.

Being a World Cup qualifying event, it’s is probably the most important chess tournament in Queensland, Australia for at least 10 years. He came very close to winning today, but in the end Vladimir Kramnik had to accept that his ending agains Viswanathan Anand was a draw. After the 9th game the Indian is now leading the World Championship match 6-3, and just needs a draw to retain his title. Read more

The second half of the Anand-Kramnik World Championship match has started with a draw in 37 moves. Playing the white pieces again, Anand got a slight advantage in an ending but by sacrificing a pawn Kramnik forced a liquidation to a drawn pawn ending. It’s 5-2 for Anand now. Read more

Next weekend probably the strongest team competition in the world starts its new season: the Schachbundesliga. Of the sixteen top teams, OSC Baden-Baden is the big favourite with sixteen grandmasters in their squad, headed by Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen.
