By beating Aleksandr Lenderman (USA) in a tough fight in Sunday's final round, Alexander Areshchenko (Ukraine) emerged as the winner of the Chigorin Memorial, a strong open tournament held in St. Petersburg. With four rounds to play Ivan Cheparinov is in sole first place at the Black Sea Countries tournament in Burgas, Bulgaria. The Bulgarian grandmaster scored 4.5/6, half a point more than Alexander Areshchenko (Ukraine) and Vladimir Malakhov (Russia).

Anton Korobov won the Ukrainian Championship in Kiev convincingly, finishing a point ahead of Alexander Areshchenko and Andrei Volokitin. Korobov's 8/11 was good for a 2831 TPR. Top seed Ruslan Ponomariov finished on 4th place with 6/11.

Andrei Volokitin is leading the Ukrainian Championship in Kiev after six rounds of play.
