With four rounds to play Ivan Cheparinov is in sole first place at the Black Sea Countries tournament in Burgas, Bulgaria. The Bulgarian grandmaster scored 4.5/6, half a point more than Alexander Areshchenko (Ukraine) and Vladimir Malakhov (Russia).

After a bit of a "slow start", no less than four games have suddenly been adjourned at the Golden Classic in Amsterdam. At the Dutch Championship, Anish Giri is in firm lead with 4.5/5 while at the SPA Open there's a three way tie between GM Tejas Bakre, IM Manuel Bosboom and FM Floris van Assendelft.

In Sunday's report on the Golden Classic tournament we made a mistake (which we duly corrected), thinking that no game had been adjourned yet because all results were known quickly after the end of both rounds. Magnus Carlsen tops the May 1st FIDE rating list with the same rating as two months ago: 2835. Howevever, his lead has decreased to 10 points as Levon Aronian of Armenia won 5 points to get to 2825.
There were few changes in the world's top 10 in the past two months. At the moment of writing, Aronian's live rating is in fact 2826 so just 9 points...

Ni Hua of China finished first on tiebreak at the Dubai Open. The 28-year-old grandmaster from Shanghai finished shared first, together with Georgians Baadur Jobava & Mikheil Mchedlishvili as well as Normunds Miezis of Latvia and Chanda Sandipan of India.

The European Championship started on Tuesday in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. There was quite a number of upsets in the first round: IM Filiop Pancevski beat GM Andrei Volokitin, FM David Klein won against GM Ivan Saric and IM Evgenija Ovod defeated GM Eltaj Safarli, to name a few. Besides, the new ECU dress code is in effect at the tournament.

Hrant Melkumyan of Armenia won the European Blitz Championship while Georgian Baadur Jobava finished first in the Rapid tournament. The events were held 16-18 December in Warsaw, Poland.

The Memorial E. Crespi in Milan is the strongest and biggest Italian open, with 290 players in various categories including 58 in the Master Group.
