Levon Aronian won the third and final chess event at the World Mind Games in Beijing: blindfold chess. The Armenian grandmaster scored 5.5/7 which was half a point more than Hikaru Nakamura. The bronze medal went to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Hou Yifan won the women's section ahead of Viktorija Cmilyte and Anna Zatonskih.

Laurent Fressinet won the rapid tournament at the World Mind Games in Beijing, China. The Frenchman edged out Hikaru Nakamura on tie-break after both players finished on 5.5/7. In the women's section the gold medal went to Kateryna Lahno, who had the better tie-break after finishing shared first with Hou Yifan, Humpy Koneru and Anna Muzychuk....

The fifth edition of the World Mind Games, the second organized by SportAccord, is currently under way in Beijing, China. This multi-sport event includes five mind sports: bridge, chess, draughts, go and xiangqi (Chinese chess). The chess players play rapid, blitz and blindfold.

Last November we posted a brief article titled "A cool game from the Chinese league". The club competition in China stretches out between April and December with a few rounds played every one or two months. We're not reporting on it each time, unless we see something special – like another cool game!

At the World Mind Games in Beijing, China Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France won the blitz event while Zoltan Almasi of Hungary finished first in the blindfold tournament. World Champion Hou Yifan of China won both the blitz and the blindfold women's tournaments.

At the Sport Accord World Mind Games, which currently take place in Beijing, China Wang Hao won the rapid tournament in the men's section and Alexandra Kosteniuk in the women's section. The chess part of the World Mind Games continues after the weekend with blitz and blindfold tournaments.

The Chinese league is one of the strongest national team competitions, and still it's rarely reported about in the English chess media. Naturally the main reason is the language issue: for European or American journalists it's not easy to find, let alone decipher, the Chinese chess websites.
