Sergey Karjakin won the original Piterenka rapid/blitz tournament on Saturday where the prize was a piece of land in the Moscow region, along the river Piterenka. In the all-decisive Armageddon game Karjakin was a full rook down against Alexander Grischuk, who allowed a stalemate.

A remarkable one-day tournament will be held tomorrow, December 29th, 2012 in Moscow with four Russian top grandmasters: Sergey Karjakin, Alexander Grischuk, Dmitry Jakovenko and Ian Nepomniachtchi. The winner will receive a piece of land in the Moscow region, along the river Piterenka.

Yesterday the Russian Chess Federation announced the Aeroflot Open 2013. The good news is that it's actually going to be organized. The bad news (to many) is that the format has moved from classical chess to rapid and blitz.

Sergey Karjakin won the gold medal at the blitz chess part of the World Mind Games in Beijing, China. The Russian grandmaster scored a splendid 12.5/15 which was 1.5 points more than Hikaru Nakamura. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov won the bronze medal on tie-break. In the women's section Alexandra Kosteniuk edged out Anna Muzychuk on tie-break.

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave won the European Blitz Championship on Friday in Warsaw, Poland. The French grandmaster scored a splendid 18.5/22 to clinch his second European Blitz title. A number of rare handwritten annotations by Bobby Fischer from the historic 1970 Herceg Novi Blitz Tournament are currently auctioned at PFC Auctions. Fischer wrote down his games on paper, and added comments. He won the famous blitz tournament convincingly, scoring 19/22 points (4.5 points ahead of the rest).

Last Sunday we reported on the Moscow Blitz tournament which was won by Alexander Morozevich. Meanwhile, videos from this event have appeared on YouTube.
