Sarkhan Gashimov, the older brother and manager of top GM Vugar Gashimov, won a strong blitz tournament in San Sebastian last week, ahead of many grandmasters. Rated 2351, the amateur player from Azerbaijan defeated Julio Granda Zuniga of Peru in the final.

Hrant Melkumyan of Armenia won the European Blitz Championship while Georgian Baadur Jobava finished first in the Rapid tournament. The events were held 16-18 December in Warsaw, Poland.

At the World Mind Games in Beijing, China Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France won the blitz event while Zoltan Almasi of Hungary finished first in the blindfold tournament. World Champion Hou Yifan of China won both the blitz and the blindfold women's tournaments.

At the Sport Accord World Mind Games, which currently take place in Beijing, China Wang Hao won the rapid tournament in the men's section and Alexandra Kosteniuk in the women's section. The chess part of the World Mind Games continues after the weekend with blitz and blindfold tournaments.

The first official FIDE rapid and blitz rating lists will be published on July 1st, 2012. The World Chess Federation plans to publish new lists every month. For the first list, rapid and blitz tournaments can be rated per January 1st, 2012. All this was published last Wednesday at the FIDE website. We might as well copy the full text here:

(UPDATED) Garry Kasparov beat Nigel Short 4.5-3.5 in the YourNextMove blitz match that took place on Sunday evening in Leuven, Belgium. In a match that wasn't without mistakes, Kasparov had a 2-point lead after five games, but Short levelled the score with two consecutive wins. Kasparov then won the last game, and the match.

Garry Kasparov will play an 8-game blitz match against Nigel Short, on October 9th in Leuven, Belgium. Venue is the Leuven city hall and the match will start at 18.30 local (Central European) time. Chess-news reports that the time control will be 5 minutes plus 3 seconds increment, but Nigel Short told us that he thought it was only 2 seconds...

On Saturday in Clichy, France Garry Kasparov showed that he's still capable of beating today's top players in blitz. The 13th World Champion won a 2-game exhibition match against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave 1.5-0.5. The match was part of a bigger event which promoted the Kasparov Chess Foundation’s work with chess in schools.

In a press release the Internet Chess Club (ICC) announces its first "ICC Open", an online blitz tournament with a $3,500 prize fund. Besides a main event where IMs and GMs will fight for the prizes, there will be U2200, U2000, U1800 and U1600 sections.
