Between June 5 and 11, 2013 the World Rapid & Blitz Championships will take place in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. The prize money for each World Championship is 200,000 US Dollars. For the first time in the history of the events, they are open to all players nominated by their Federations or else with ratings over 2500. More at FIDE.

Sergey Karjakin won the original Piterenka rapid/blitz tournament on Saturday where the prize was a piece of land in the Moscow region, along the river Piterenka. In the all-decisive Armageddon game Karjakin was a full rook down against Alexander Grischuk, who allowed a stalemate.

Sergey Karjakin won the gold medal at the blitz chess part of the World Mind Games in Beijing, China. The Russian grandmaster scored a splendid 12.5/15 which was 1.5 points more than Hikaru Nakamura.
