In another excellent round fight in Nalchik, Evgeny Alekseev climbed to shared first place after a fine win over Sergey Karjakin. Gata Kamsky finally won again, beating Grischuk with Black, and Etienne Bacrot scored his first win of the tournament after drawing eight. The rest of the games were very interesting draws. The Grand Prix in Nalchik keeps on producing exciting chess. In the eighth round Black was in perfect shape by winning two games, while the remaining games ended in draw. Beyond dispute, man of the day was Boris Gelfand, who came up already on move nine with an surprising novelty and outplayed Rustam Kasimdzhanov in only 28 moves! Video added.

In round seven of the Nalchik Grand Prix, Karjakin and Eljanov won their games, while Aronian maintained his lead. The round was also notable for the players‘ opening choices – some were unusual, some instructive and some rather strange. Update: video added!

The 4th Grand Prix tournament is becoming a nice and bloody one, as tournament leader Alexander Grischuk was beaten by Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in round six. As it turns out anyone can beat anyone. Levon Aronian took advantage by beating Vassily Ivanchuk and thereby regaining the tournament lead.

Chess fans generally want as many decisive games as possible, but a fighting draw with strong play from both sides can be very attractive as well. After a marvellous start of 2/2 Levon Aronian was held by Sergey Karjakin, who announced earlier this week that he will play for Russia in the near future. Main reason is the less reward for the big results the Ukrainian team achieved in last few years, for example winning the 2004 Olympiad. (Video added!)

Levon Aronian very patiently scored his second victory in a row against his fellow country man Vladimir Akopian and is the sole leader of the tournament after two rounds.
