Hikaru Nakamura won the U.S. Championship on Saturday after beating Yasser Seirawan with white in the last round. The top rated American grandmaster finished a full point ahead of Gata Kamsky and with a point less, third came Alexander Onischuk. A report on the final two rounds.

Thanks to three consecutive wins in rounds 7, 8 and 9 Gata Kamsky is in sole lead at the U.S. Championships in Saint Louis, USA. The American grandmaster caught Hikaru Nakamura in round 7 and surpassed him in round 9, by beating Yasser Seirawan, while Nakamura had to concede a draw against Aleksandr Lenderman. Hikaru Nakamura is in sole lead at the U.S. Championships in Saint Louis, USA after six rounds. The highest rated American grandmaster, currently #7 in the world, won three games and drew three. Magnus Carlsen tops the May 1st FIDE rating list with the same rating as two months ago: 2835. Howevever, his lead has decreased to 10 points as Levon Aronian of Armenia won 5 points to get to 2825.
There were few changes in the world's top 10 in the past two months. At the moment of writing, Aronian's live rating is in fact 2826 so just 9 points...

Last weekend Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana played in the Italian Team Championship. The world's #6 and #7 were in fact sitting side by side, playing for the same team "Obiettivo Risarcimento" from Padova. While Nakamura played only three games, Caruana is still active for his team.

For the first time in his career, Fabiano Caruana (Italy) entered the world's top 10. On the March 1 FIDE rating list, the 19-year-old Italian grandmaster occupies the 7th spot with a 2767 rating. Hikaru Nakamura (USA) re-entered the top 10 and is 6th, with 2771. Magnus Carlsen (Norway) still tops the list with a rating of 2835.

After a year of absence, Hikaru Nakamura will be back in St. Louis this year to seek his third U.S. Championship title. His main rival will be reigning champion Gata Kamsky while former winner and "semi-retired" Yasser Seirawan will be playing for the second year in a row.
