GM Hou Yifan (FIDE 2609) of China got out of the blocks early against GM Anna Ushenina (FIDE 2500) of Ukraine at the 2013 Women's World Championship in Taizhou, China. Playing in her home country, Hou is the former title holder, and seeks to retake her title from the current title holder. The match is taking place from September 10-28, 2013.

Hou Yifan defeated David Navara on Friday in the Cez Chess Trophy match by the smallest possible margin. The 19-year-old Chinese won the all-decisive Armageddon game after all four classical games had ended in draws, and both players had exchanged victories in two blitz games.

In his traditional Cez Chess Trophy match, David Navara this year faces Hou Yifan. The first two games ended in draws. The festival started with a simul by Hou Yifan, there is an exhibition on chess themes in heraldry, a quiz by GM Vlastimil Hort, a lecture by GM Robert Cvek on chess improvement and a lecture on the history of blindfold chess.

Levon Aronian won the third and final chess event at the World Mind Games in Beijing: blindfold chess. The Armenian grandmaster scored 5.5/7 which was half a point more than Hikaru Nakamura. The bronze medal went to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Hou Yifan won the women's section ahead of Viktorija Cmilyte and Anna Zatonskih.
