Nigel Short and Ivan Sokolov are tied for first place after five rounds at the Sigeman & Co tournament in Malmö, Sweden. After an early loss, Short recovered and caught Sokolov in first place by defeating Loek van Wely in a fascinating game on Sunday. In general the tournament has displayed some really sparkling chess.

After three rounds, there are still fifteen players with a 100% score at the Reykjavik Open, including top seeds Anish Giri and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. Wednesday was the day of the gruelling double rounds – Ivan Sokolov decided to play only one, but this wasn't a successful strategy. In round 3 Fridrik Olafsson was too friendly to his opponent.

Hoogeveen (Netherlands) won the World Cities Team Championship on Friday in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. The team with Anish Giri, Ivan Sokolov, Sergey Tiviakov and Jan Smeets beat Baku (Azerbaijan) 2.5-1.5 in the final thanks to a win by Tiviakov. Sanan Sjugirov is leading the Casino Barcelona tournament after six rounds. The 19-year-old Russian grandmaster scored a superb 5/6 and is now half a point ahead of Danish grandmaster Peter Heine Nielsen.

21 year old Danny de Ruiter has quickly risen to fame in the Dutch chess scene. Not even an FM yet, rated 2182, the chess player from Alkmaar, the Netherlands managed to beat two famous Dutch grandmasters in a period of two weeks: Ivan Sokolov and Jan Timman!

Ivan Cheparinov won the Politiken Cup in Helsingør, Denmark on Sunday. The Bulgarian grandmaster edged out GMs Ivan Sokolov and Jonny Hector on tie-break after all three scored 8 out of 10. Chess legends Jan Timman and Lajos Portisch participated as well.

Ivan Sokolov won the World Open in Philadelphia on Tuesday after finishing shared first with Alexander Shabalov. The players drew their final round quickly to reach a total score of 7/9, when the Dutch grandmaster won the Armageddon game to clinch the title and the $12926.50 first prize.

Ni Hua of China finished first on tiebreak at the Dubai Open. The 28-year-old grandmaster from Shanghai finished shared first, together with Georgians Baadur Jobava & Mikheil Mchedlishvili as well as Normunds Miezis of Latvia and Chanda Sandipan of India.
