Wesley So won the gold medal at the 27th Universiade in Kazan. In an Armageddon game, the Philippine grandmaster defeated GM Zaven Andriasian of Armenia, who took silver. The bronze medal went to Li Chao of China. In the women's section, the podium was filled with Chinese players: Zhao Xue (gold), Ju Wenjun (silver) and Tan Zhongyi (bronze).

China won the gold medals in both the open and women's sections at the Asian Team Championship in Zaozhuang, Shandong (China). Fabiano Caruana won the 20th Sigeman & Co tournament in Malmö, Sweden on Wednesday. The Italian grandmaster scored a splendid 5.5/7 which was half a point more than Peter Leko and good for a 2853 performance rating. Anish Giri and Nils Grandelius shared third place with 4/7.

Fabiano Caruana started with 2.5/3 at the Sigeman & Co tournament in Malmö, Sweden. The Italian grandmaster is in sole first place after beating Anish Giri and Hans TIkkanen with the white pieces and then drawing against Peter Leko with Black.
