On Monday the Olympiad's top clash between Armenia and Russia ended in 2-2. The two countries were caught in the lead by Azerbaijan, who defeated Croatia 3-1. In the women's section Russia, who played 2-2 against China, is now sharing the lead with Poland.

Only Armenia and Russia won all of their five matches and so they are sharing the lead at the Olympiad in Istanbul during the first rest day. On Monday they will meet in what will be one of the crucial matches this year. In the women's section Russia defeated France to reach 10 match points as well. Four countries are sharing the lead after four rounds at the Olympiad in Istanbul: Armenia, Hungary, Russia and Ukraine. They all started with four victories, and of these federations Ukraine has the best first and second tie-break. In the women's section only Russia and France have eight match points.

On Tuesday it was business as usual for the first round of an Olympiad: strong teams beating weak teams with high scores, a few upsets here and there and the typical problems with the live transmission of the games. For the latter the organizers have already apologized.

Last night the 40th Chess Olympiad was officially opened at the WOW Convention center in Istanbul, Turkey. The drawing of lots resulted in the black pieces for top seed Russia in round 1 of the Open section while China will start with the white pieces in their first match in the Women's section.

Ali Nihat Yazici, the President of the Turkish Chess Federation, has proposed to "suspend from FIDE" the seven chess federations that started two court cases against the World Chess Federation recently. The proposal is put on the agenda of the FIDE Congress which will be held next month in Istanbul.
