Sanan Sjugirov is leading the Casino Barcelona tournament after six rounds. The 19-year-old Russian grandmaster scored a superb 5/6 and is now half a point ahead of Danish grandmaster Peter Heine Nielsen.

After two more victories this weekend (one with the smallest possible margin against their big rival Werder Bremen) the team from Baden-Baden is very close to winning yet another Bundesliga title. The European Chess Union (ECU) has rejected the protest of Peter Heine Nielsen about the way the performance ratings were calculated at this year's European Championship in Aix les Bains. Admitting that their calculations were flawed, the ECU's main argument for rejecting is that the Danish grandmaster should have protested 'in due time'.
