A remarkable one-day tournament will be held tomorrow, December 29th, 2012 in Moscow with four Russian top grandmasters: Sergey Karjakin, Alexander Grischuk, Dmitry Jakovenko and Ian Nepomniachtchi. The winner will receive a piece of land in the Moscow region, along the river Piterenka.

Alexey Dreev scored another rapid success after his victory at the European Championship last week. The Russian grandmaster won the final of the Rapid Grand Prix of Russia which took place 23-24 December 2012. Dreev beat Vladislav Artemiev in the final 1.5-0.5. Yesterday the Russian Chess Federation announced the Aeroflot Open 2013. The good news is that it's actually going to be organized. The bad news (to many) is that the format has moved from classical chess to rapid and blitz.

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave won the European Blitz Championship on Friday in Warsaw, Poland. The French grandmaster scored a splendid 18.5/22 to clinch his second European Blitz title. Laurent Fressinet won the rapid tournament at the World Mind Games in Beijing, China. The Frenchman edged out Hikaru Nakamura on tie-break after both players finished on 5.5/7. In the women's section the gold medal went to Kateryna Lahno, who had the better tie-break after finishing shared first with Hou Yifan, Humpy Koneru and Anna Muzychuk....

The fifth edition of the World Mind Games, the second organized by SportAccord, is currently under way in Beijing, China. This multi-sport event includes five mind sports: bridge, chess, draughts, go and xiangqi (Chinese chess). The chess players play rapid, blitz and blindfold.

Beating Vassily Ivanchuk 4.5-3.5 in the final, Anatoly Karpov won the "Trophée Anatoly Karpov" in Cap d'Agde on Saturday. The 61 year old World Champion clinched the trophy named after himself when his opponent lost on time in the 6th blitz game.
