Etienne Bacrot won the Corsica Masters on Wednesday in Ajaccio. In the final, the French grandmaster defeated his compatriot Laurent Fressinet 2-0. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Nigel Short were eliminated in the semi-finals on Monday.

Leinier Dominguez won a strong 12-player rapid event in St. Petersburg on Sunday. The Cuban grandmaster edged out local hero Peter Svidler on tie-break as both finished on 7.5/11. Another St Petersburg citizen finished third: Nikita Vitiugov.

Loek van Wely won the third 'Grand Prix FFE' in Aix-les-Bains on Sunday. In doing so the Dutchman, who defeated Laurent Fressinet in the final, also qualified for the annual rapid event in Bastia, Corsica later this year.

Sergey Karjakin won the FIDE World Rapid Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan on Sunday. The Moscovite finished on 11.5/15, a point more than Magnus Carlsen, who lost to Vassily Ivanchuk and Alexander Grischuk on the last day. Veselin Topalov finished in third place. After ten rounds of play, Magnus Carlsen has a 1.5 point lead over Sergey Karjakin and Veselin Topalov. Tomorrow the last five rounds of the World Rapid Championship will be played in Astana, Kazakhstan. Carlsen still has to play against Ismagambetov, Ivanchuk, Grischuk, Radjabov and in the final round Topalov.
