Sarkhan Gashimov, the older brother and manager of top GM Vugar Gashimov, won a strong blitz tournament in San Sebastian last week, ahead of many grandmasters. Rated 2351, the amateur player from Azerbaijan defeated Julio Granda Zuniga of Peru in the final.

Andrei Volokitin beat Viktor Laznicka in the final of the Donostia-San Sebastian Chess Festival on Thursday. The Ukrainian grandmaster, who won both his games against his opponent from the Czech Republic, received a cheque of €20,000 and an electric bike.

Viktor Laznicka (Czech Republic) and Andrei Volokitin (Ukraine) qualified for the final of the San Sebastian-Donostia Chess Festival's A group. Laznicka defeated Alexander Moiseenko (Ukraine) while Volokitin was too strong for Leinier Dominguez Perez (Cuba).

Top favourites Vugar Gashimov and Ruslan Ponomariov were eliminated in the 5th round of the San Sebastian-Donostia Chess Festival's A group. They lost to Viktor Laznicka and Andrei Volokitin respectively.

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Arkadij Naiditsch and Vachier-Lagrave were the strongest names that didn't manage to reach the 4th round of the San Sebastian-Donostia Chess Festival's A group. All players rated above 2700 have survived the second round of the San Sebastian knock-out tournament. Other strong GMs were condemned to continue in the B tournament, such as Konstantin Landa, Loek van Wely and Ivan Cheparinov.

In a strange turn of events, Vugar Gashimov, without his knowledge, was replaced by Alexander Morozevich at the 54th Torneo di Capodanno. The tournament, which starts tomorrow in Reggio Emilia, also has Ivanchuk, Nakamura, Vitiguov, Caruana and Giri playing.

Gros Xake Taldea won the top league of the 2011 Spanish Team Championship. It was the first title ever for the team of San Sebastian, in the same year that the local chess scene will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the famous San Sebastian 1911 tournament.
