Boris Gelfand is the sole leader at the Alekhine Memorial in St Petersburg after eight rounds. On Tuesday the Israeli grandmaster saved a difficult endgame against Vladimir Kramnik, while co-leader Maxime Vachier-Lagrave lost with the white pieces to Nikita Vitiugov. In the sixth round of the Alekhine Memorial all five games ended in draws, and so Maxime Vachier-Lagrave remains in sole first place. On Friday the players, organizers and some journalists flew to Russia and on Saturday they enjoyed a rest day. Three more rounds will be played in St Petersburg.

By beating Aleksandr Lenderman (USA) in a tough fight in Sunday's final round, Alexander Areshchenko (Ukraine) emerged as the winner of the Chigorin Memorial, a strong open tournament held in St. Petersburg.
