It was a strong round-robin with nine GMs but a dream came true for the only IM in the field, Daniel Alsina: he won the Torneig Cuitat de Barcelona outright, with 6.5/9, a full point ahead of GMs López Martinez and Magem Badals. Anish Giri could enjoy the title for about eight months, but now there's a new youngest grandmaster in the world: Ray Robson from the USA. By winning the Panamerican Junior Championship in Montevideo, Uruguay Robson clinched his 3rd GM norm, just 14 years 11 months and 16 days old.

In what was a small, friendly and cosy "cafe tournament", the young Dutch talent Robin van Kampen scored his first IM norm. This year's Chess Festival in Groningen was won by GMs Merab Gagunashvili and Arkadij Rotstein, and Dutch IM Robin Swinkels. The latter scored a GM norm and so did 14-year-old (FM!) Anish Giri - it was his second already. Jan Smeets won a minimatch against Jan Werle 2.5-1.5.
