On December 17th, in Moscow's Central House of Literature, the Caissa Award was awared to 16 individuals. Sergey Karjakin (who couldn't attend the evening because he participated in the Mind Games in Beijing) and Valentina Gunina received the best players awards.

Today the Russian Championship Superfinal started in Moscow, Russia. The first round immediately saw the top pairing Grischuk-Karjakin; this game ended in a draw. Evgeny Alekseev and Dmitry Andreikin started with wins, beating Nikita Vitiugov and Vladimir Potkin respectively. In the women's section only Tatiana Kosintseva won her first game....

Antoaneta Stefanova won the Women's World Rapid Championship in Batumi, Georgia. The Bulgarian finished at 8.5/11 which was half a point more than Alexandra Kosteniuk, Humpy Koneru and Kateryna Lahno. Valentina Gunina of Russia was the convincing winner at the Women's World Blitz Championship which was held right after.

Just after the regular tournament, won by Valentina Gunina of Russia, the European Women's Rapid and Blitz Championships were held in Gaziantep, Turkey. Gunina also took the blitz title, while Tatiana Kosintseva was the strongest in the rapid section.

Valentina Gunina won the European Women's Championship on Tuesday in Gaziantep, Turkey. The 23-year-old Russian IM edged out Tatiana Kosintseva and Anna Muzychuk on tie-break after the three had finished on 8.5/11.
