Lazaron Bruzon Batista won the 8th Edmonton International most convincingly. The Cuban grandmaster scored 8/9 (a 2771 performance) and finished two full points ahead of Nigel Short. No norms were scored in the GM group this year.

On Monday Nigel Short won the 7th Edmonton International in Alberta, Canada. The tournament was a 10-player round robin designed for scoring norms. The winner scored six wins, two draws and one loss, finishing on 20 points as the 3-1-0 scoring system was used.
