Alexei Shirov beat Viktor Laznicka in a 6-game friendly match played in Novy Bor, Czech Republic. After three draws the Latvian grandmaster won games 4 and 5, the latter due to a big blunder by Laznicka. The final game was also drawn.

Vassily Ivanchuk won the Capablanca Memorial in Havana, Cuba on Monday. The Ukrainian, who finished a point clear of Ian Nepomniachtchi and Leinier Dominguez, won the tournament for the 6th time in his career.

Vassily Ivanchuk has good chances to win yet another title in Havana. After outplaying Viktor Laznicka in round 5 of the Capablanca Memorial, the Ukrainian is the sole leader again with 3.5/5. Leinier Dominguez is in second place with half a point less.

The European Championship started on Tuesday in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. There was quite a number of upsets in the first round: IM Filiop Pancevski beat GM Andrei Volokitin, FM David Klein won against GM Ivan Saric and IM Evgenija Ovod defeated GM Eltaj Safarli, to name a few. Besides, the new ECU dress code is in effect at the tournament.

Andrei Volokitin beat Viktor Laznicka in the final of the Donostia-San Sebastian Chess Festival on Thursday. The Ukrainian grandmaster, who won both his games against his opponent from the Czech Republic, received a cheque of €20,000 and an electric bike.
