Wesley So won the gold medal at the 27th Universiade in Kazan. In an Armageddon game, the Philippine grandmaster defeated GM Zaven Andriasian of Armenia, who took silver. The bronze medal went to Li Chao of China. In the women's section, the podium was filled with Chinese players: Zhao Xue (gold), Ju Wenjun (silver) and Tan Zhongyi (bronze).

Zhao Xue won the 3rd Women's Grand Prix tournament in Nalchik, Russia with the super score of 9.5/11. The Chinese grandmaster had even started with 9.5/10 but lost in the last round. Nonetheless she finished 2.5 points ahead of the rest of the field.
