Going Undutch

Today I have to make a sad announcement that doesn’t really concern you, as you’re reading the English version of this article. Anyway, here it goes: ChessVibes stops the Dutch version of the site.
This week I told some friends I’d probably have to empty a bottle of whiskey before I dare to take the step and end the Dutch ChessVibes. Unfortunately I’m completely sober while writing this!
Why?
It’s about time, for me personally, to professionalize ChessVibes further. I’ve been working fulltime on the site for about half a year now, and I’m trying to make a living out of this former hobby. To further improve ChessVibes (using the Survey!) and add new services, but also to be able to spend more time on the business aspects of ChessVibes, I have to create more time for myself. Translating all those articles is very time consuming and is done for about just thirty percent of my visitors these days.
Authors
For you, who’s reading this in English, there’s nothing but good news. “Going undutch” means I’m creating the possibility to work with more authors, and I’ve already found some more people (besides the current editors) who want to write for ChessVibes. One of them has written his first article, on “beauty in chess”, which will be published within a few days. (Do let me know if you feel like writing yourself!)
Holiday
Especially in the coming weeks, when your editor-in-chief will be on holiday (more about this later), this becomes very relevant. Some co-editors will write articles, and the good thing is that these don’t have to be translated into Dutch anymore.
It was not easy for me to take this step, but I think for the future of ChessVibes it’s a wise one. For you not much will change, except that you can expect some new stuff soon. For example a Summer Contest, which will start next Saturday!

I cannot imagine what you experience or feel, but very, very deeply appreciate your website. quickly raisig to the forefront of chess news globally. i understand the pains of growth, but this must be the right decision. blessings in your next step in establishing this fantastic site upon a firmer business footing, so that it can live on, and live better, that much longer.
I liked the Dutch version and I was checking it out. Please do try to keep it.

Beste Peter,
De vlag hoeft maar even halfstok, voor de nostalgie.
Daarna kan ie weer fier in de top, zodra iedereen zich realiseert dat je beslissing het beste is voor de site en voor jou zelf. Zonder jou was deze site er niet eens.
Ik blijf je volgen en ben dankbaar voor de site in het verleden en benieuwd naar het vele goeds wat ongetwijfeld gaat komen in de toekomst.
Hopelijk trek je je de negatieve reacties die ook zullen komen niet te lang aan…

this is my first post on this site, although I’ve been visiting it almost daily in the last months. For me it is the chess website I enjoy the most - especially the videos! I can’t imagine how hard it is to go professional and try to make a living from this. I wish you all the best in these efforts.
On topic: I am always impressed how well Dutch people have mastered the English language. And hey, don’t we live in a globalized world after all? I think there will be more people who gain from your decision than who lose.

Dit kun je niet maken!?
Binnen pakweg 50 jaar zal het Nederlands verpieterd zijn tot een soort “patois”
en zal het “in” zijn je kinderen in al dan niet krom Engels op te voeden en naar engelstalige scholen te sturen.

Het is ondenkbaar dat een Spaanse, Franse of Italiaanse webredacteur zijn eigen taal in de vuilnisbak smijt ten voordele van het Engels.
Maar ja, Nederlanders zijn nu eenmaal één van de meest anglofiele / veramerikaniseerde volkjes op deze aardkloot.
Zelfs Vlamingen zouden zoiets niet doen ; wij weten wat het is je taal en cultuur weggeveegd te zien worden (honderden jaren verfransing).
Het Engels naast je eigen taal aanbieden en op gelijke voet behandelen : verstandig.
Je eigen taal dumpen voor een andere : krankzinnig.
Voor de rest proficiat met je qua inhoud uitstekende website en ja ik weet het : de beste stuurlui staan aan wal.

IMO the Dutch language is not the key issue. Chessvibes is a Dutch site, so keep writing articles about Dutch events, Dutch players etc.. That’s the “colour locale” Chessvibes needs to keep. When King Loek rises again from the ashes in the next tournament I want to know everything.

Logical decision. Unfortunately I have to agree with Peter and I’m sure we will be fully compensated in quality and quantity.
A pity for the dutch people out there, but I suppose a lot of them speak english; the ones who don’t: I’m honestly sorry for you…but try to look at it from Peter’s point of view.
People who write “sell-out” are exactly the ones who expect people like you, Peter, to deliver everything for free in 36 languages spending all your free time for it- while themselves probably never proposed to help you. Or they seriously think a website like this is easy to set up and keep running on a long term single-handedly and without professional structures…
I’ll give them the benifit of doubt an call it “naivity”.
So do not listen, your decision is fully understandable.

P.S.: I am sure Peter would happily agree for people translating all his articles from english into dutch for free in their free time!

I think you took the right decision and after all English is the lingua franca for chess publishing. Chessvibes will be my favourite for as long as you keep the quality as high as it is now.
Michel, kijk eens wat breder dan de Benelux, misschien maakt dat de redenering wat zuiverder. In Mexico heb je het Spanglish, in Rusland (gyorl=girl=meisje) en Japan (kaaten=curtain), maar ook in Duitsland, Frankrijk en Scandivanië gebruiken miljoenen taalgebruikers talloze Engelse leenwoorden. Dat Nederlanders extreme anglofielen zijn is echt onzin, het is een mondiaal fenomeen en heeft natuurlijk niets met (gebrek aan) liefde voor de eigen taal te maken. En trouwens: wees blij dat zoveel Nederlanders moeiteloos Engels kunnen lezen! Dat is in sommige landen wel anders. Voor sommige mensen is er altijd wel wat te klagen.

De teloorgang van een stukje Hollandse glorie…
Agh, iedereen zou kiezen voor het geld. Het moet, zoals wordt beweerd, een weloverwogen besluit zijn. Mij is het sausage welke van de twee talen gebruikt wordt. De site heet Chessvibes, niet Schaaktrillingen, en we willen schaaknieuws, toch? Jammer voor hen die geen engels spreken. Ik verwijs ze door naar http://www.schakers.info, hoewel je ook daar tegenwoordig weer terug naar chessvibes gestuurd wordt. De jongere lezertjes moeten toch Engels leren, en de oudere lezen toch alleen de krant en hooguit hun email.

Oh yeah, there was a Dutch version as well… that I never checked despite being Dutch. Sorry. Mostly because I’m so used to English notation that reading 2.Pf3 Pc6 3.Bb5 is like reading a foreign language.
And people who moan about this decision are free to start up their own chess website, and run it entirely in Dutch. I will be curious to read it.
Het is jammer Peter, maar opzich begrijp ik je besluit wel. Gelukkig kan ik zowel Nederlands en Engels, dus zal het voor mij niet zoveel effect hebben.
Blijf je nog wel berichten over de evenementen in Nederland?
Ik kijk bijna iedere dag op deze site en zal dat blijven doen ook als je overschakelt naar het Engels.

Chessvibes is voor mij uniek, omdat je alles in het Nederlands kunt lezen.

Congratulation for this site my favorite of the internet I’m French and I read your page in English on daily basis.
So I hope most of the German People will do it same way.
I support Peter in his decision to worki full-time with . If stopping the Dutch articles is what is necessary for him to do that then he must take the decision that is right for him.
I haven’t expressed that very well but I expect you get my drift.

Excellent decision, from all important points of view. English-only is really the way to go for an internationally oriented chess site like chessvibes. And, why spend so much time translating into Dutch while most Dutch people can read English really well. Those few Dutch people you’ll lose, will be more than compensated for by the new readers you’ll get by further improving your site. Focus on the quality.

Hoi Peter,
Ik neem vrijwel dagelijks een kijkje op jouw site en heb daar heel veel plezier aan beleefd. Het was ook aardig om te zien hoe de site groeide, professionaliseerde en hoe jouw enthousiasme steeds groter werd. Zeker toen je filmpjes ging maken en dat de ingang bleek tot de perskamer van grote internationale toernooien en interviews met topspelers.
Natuurlijk vind ik het jammer dat de Nederlandstalige artikelen nu verdwijnen, zo chauvinistisch ben ik wel. Maar zo gaan die dingen nu eenmaal, en voor de Nederlandse schaker en het Nederlandse schaakleven is er altijd nog http://www.schakers.info.
Deze site was natuurlijk allang internationaal georienteerd, iedereen die de site regelmatig bezoekt heeft dat zien gebeuren. De metamorfose van Doggerschaak naar Chessvibes ligt al geruime tijd achter ons.
Geweldig voor je dat je van deze uit de hand gelopen hobby je werk hebt kunnen maken! Het is je van harte gegund. Ik zal de site in ieder geval blijven bezoeken.

But there are so many beautiful words in Dutch–like Heineken, or Grolsch!
It’s sad but understandable. It gave an extra colour to the site that I will miss. But time moves on, I guess. At least I am sure that we will still have that Dutch flavour in your interest in the doings of Stellwagen, Smeets, Van Wely, et al, plus the more local tournaments that might not get a mention on other sites.

Nu ja, ik zal vanaf deze week maar beginnen met mijn cursus chinees, Zowel DE internettaal voor de komende 50 jaar als het land wat pre-dominant zal zijn in schaakland.

What a pity, but how understandable! Good luck. I can tell that writing English (or whichever other laguage) is way easier than translating. Keep up all the good work.
Nog wat, als we ons willen spiegelen aan de fransen, vlamingen, duitsers en wat dies meer zij, zal Peter er naast ChessVibes ook een andere job op na moeten houden, wil er continuïteit kunnen zijn. En dat komt natuurlijk niet ten goede aan deze site.
Noem mij maar één Vlaamstalige website, in welk vakgebied dan ook, die toonaangevend is in haar soort!

but in general, in my experience, people from holland are good at english. so it shouldn’t be that much of a problem.
Het is zeer spijtig dat de nederlandstalige versie verdwijnt, maar gezien de omstandigheden die je schetst is het zeer begrijpelijk.
Op zich zou het een leuk idee zijn om chessvibes.nl te lanceren.
Ik wacht met spanning de komende ontwikkelingen af!
Heel jammer. Ik vond Chessvibes, plus de ‘ingezonden commentaren’, een verfrissende site - een beetje a la Schaakbulletin (on-line). Nu ben ik bang dat we richting New in Chess gaan - schaaktechnisch hoogstaand, maar qua tekst droog en laf (om de GMs te vriend te houden - DJ Ten Geuzendam).
Wie staat op om een onafhankelijke, kritische site te beginnen in de mooiste taal ter wereld, het Nederlands?
