Today a little extra from the Noteboom Tournament. GM Jan Smeets sent us the full score of his decisive game against the final winner, GM Predrag Nikolic. We ‘talked together’ the variations he added to the main moves.

Typisch Predrag Nikolic , goed opening kenis, diep positionele gevoel in middenspeleen
prachtig techniek een uitstekende
tactische inzicht. Ik vind deze partij hel erg mooi op elke opzicht.
Jan, nice game.
19 a4 (!) that pawn is in the way, good move.
20 Nf4, at first I thought that Rf5x was the better move, but after ef5x 21 Qf5x Bd7 22 Qf3 Be6 [Bc6- Nc5(!)] 23 Nf4 (idea Nh5 and Qg3 or Ne6x and Bg6)but Black can hold it with Qd7,I think.
In the analyses at move 20 upto 24 Qg3 and Kf8
I think white is better. Nc4 cannot play because of Ba3+(!) where white has atleast a forced draw with the Nh5 and Nf6 moves. Nice is 25 a4! (again!)Bc6 (Be8 26 Nf6 Qb6 27 fg5x) 26 Nf6 Qb6 (Qe7 26 fg5x h5 27 g6) 27 Ba3+ Na3x 28 Qa3x Kg7 29 Nh5+ Kg8 30 Kf6+.
Have I overlooked something?
