Much to enjoy in Malmö

22 April 2007 20:19 PM CET | Last modified: 22:00 | By Peter Doggers  | Filed under: Reports | Tags:

So far there has been much to enjoy Malmö at the Sigeman & Co Tournament. As I wrote before, with such an field of enterprising participants a very interesting tournament is assured. Tournament organizers should probably try to take into account that when you invite at least one of players such as Berg, Timman, Hector or Hillarp Persson, you’re sure of a certain degree of spectacle. It might be a good preventive medicine against the short draw virus too.

We left the Sigeman & Co Tournament after the first round, last Wednesday. The main game of the second round was Timman-Hector, where Black, true to his style, tried a very rare gambit.

From the third round the encouter Hector-Berg should not be missed:

And then in the fourth round it became very clear that Emanuel Berg is in very good shape.

…which cannot be said of Jan Timman, the winner of last year. He lost to Negi today:

Next report we’ll talk more about Cheparinov, who’s already leading the field comfortably with one point clear.

Standings after round 5:

   1. Cheparinov 4
 2-3. Hillarp Persson, Berg 3
 4-7. Kotronias, l'Ami, Negi, Carlsson 2,5
   8. Timman 2
9-10. Hermansson, Hector 1

“Emanuel Berg & Vassilios Kotronias aan het analyseren”
In ieder geval niet hun eigen partij. Daarin hadden ze verwisselde kleuren.

Thank you for reporting Sigeman tournament. It get really low attention until now. The only site that gave something is http://www.chessdom.com, I cannot find it even in Chessbase. Well, Susan put something, but rarely…..

The standings are incorrect. Cheparinov has 4/5. With Tiger and Berg following on his heels with 3,5/5.

I love the game viewer. What’s its name? Anybody know?

I wasn’t familiar with the gambit Hector played against Timman. I liked how Hector developed ALL his pieces first and only then proceeded to take the c pawn back. Timman, on his part, never completed his development. 28…Re1 and that’s it :-)

I hope to see Timman reverse his poor start and put on some better performances. He is no longer even being invited to play as a Dutch legacy in Corus, although he has been a legend for decades prior to his recent results. I know it’s unpleasant to record last-place performances, but for the fans, he is still Timman, and we continue to root for him. Perhaps no longer with expectations to win tournaments at Corus level, but for a success in each game.
