Round 2.2: Radjabov out, Ponomariov still alive

28 November 2007 21:27 PM | Last modified: 17:50

Another big name has left the World Cup tournament: against the Pole Macieja, Teimour Radjabov had to win but he lost again. Until now it was the only upset of this second round, because Ponomariov did it again: he had to win with Black against Wang and he did. Galkin again kept Ivanchuk relatively easy to a draw and with eleven other duos they’re going to play the tiebreak tomorrow.

After his first draw yesterday, Galkin achieved the same result against Ivanchuk relatively easy with Black in a not very common line of the Petroff. A nice exchange sacrifice proved correct since his two bishops control the whole board. Against Gustafsson, Aronian used the same topical line of the Semi-Slav as in his win of yesterday to draw his game with Black today.

Shulman went for the sharpest line in a Winawer French, which always seems more easy to play for Black than for White, except on 2700-level. Especially against Shirov, who feels at home in such positions, it might not have been the best choice. But it did result in a great game.

Sergei Tiviakov defended an ending with a pawn down for more than a hundred moves till he could liquidate to a drawn pawn ending. Karjakin’s win over Zhang Penxiang was a model endgame that probably deserves to be replayed from move 1. Update: Loek van Wely was eliminated by Bareev after he couldn’t win a rook ending with a pawn up. But earlier in the game the Dutchman had missed a clear win:
