[lang_nl]De uit Zambia afkomstige IM Amon Simutowe heeft gisteren zijn 3e GM-norm gescoord door in de 8e ronde van het Euwe Stimulans Toernooi in Arnhem remise te spelen. Als ik het goed geteld heb, wordt hij als hij de ratinggrens van 2500 heeft bereikt, de zesde grootmeester van Afrika, na Hichem Hamdouchi (Marokko), Ahmed Adly, Bassem Amin (beiden Egypte), Slim Belkhodja en Slim Boaziz (beiden Tunesië). Simutowes succes is een aardige bonus voor een toch al bijzonder toernooi; de organisatoren hadden voor deze eerste editie van het Euwe Stimulans een zeer kleurrijk deelnemersveld bij elkaar gekregen.[/lang_nl][lang_en]Yesterday Zambia-born IM Amon Simutowe scored his 3rd GM norm by drawing his 8th round game of the Euwe Stimulans Tournament in Arnhem, The Netherlands. If I counted correctly, when he gets his rating over 2500 he will become Africa’s 6th grandmaster, after Hichem Hamdouchi (Morocco), Ahmed Adly, Bassem Amin (both Egypt), Slim Belkhodja and Slim Boaziz (both Tunisia). Simutowe’s success is a nice bonus for an already great tournament; for their first edition the organizers of the Euwe Stimulus had managed to bring together a very special group of participants.[/lang_en]

[lang_nl]Het persbericht dat voor het toernooi werd gepubliceerd, beschreef als volgt het deelnemersveld:

“Het zal een interessante kruisbestuiving worden tussen door alle wateren gewassen globetrotters en ambitieuze jongelingen. Deze toernooiformule is geïnspireerd op de belangrijke rol die de voormalige Nederlandse wereldkampioen Max Euwe als president van de wereldschaakbond FIDE in de jaren zeventig heeft gespeeld bij de wereldwijde verspreiding van het schaakspel. Fridrik Olafsson was de opvolger van Euwe als FIDE-president, Oscar Panno was in 1953 jeugdwereldkampioen.

Behalve Gaprindashvili, Olafsson en Panno doen mee de jonge Internationaal Meesters Helgi Dam Ziska van de Faeröer-eilanden, Amon Simutowe uit Zambia en de 17-jarige kampioen van Nieuw-Zeeland Puchen Wang. Nederland wordt vertegenwoordigd door de 21-jarige vrouwengrootmeester Bianca Muhren (de nummer twee van het Nederlands kampioenschap in 2006), IM Willy Hendriks, die op jacht gaat naar zijn tweede grootmeesterresultaat en het grote 17-jarige talent Vincent Rothuis, die in Arnhem zijn derde meesterresultaat, en daarmee de meestertitel, hoopt te behalen.”

Als tiende deelnemer wisten de organisatoren de Indiase grootmeester Dibyendu Barua aan te trekken, met een elo van 2468 meteen de sterkste deelnemer aan de internationale tienkamp. Maar het is dus het toernooi geworden van Simutowe, die een ronde voor het einde al zijn felbegeerde derde norm binnehaalde. Dit had overigens overtuigender gekund, zo gaf hij zelf ook ruiterlijk toe. In de 7e ronde had hij het nodige geluk bij zijn overwinning op Bianca Muhren in een remise-toreneindspel en zijn remisepartij van gisteren had hij moeten verliezen. Maar hoe dan ook: zijn derde resultaat staat en da’s knap.

Simutowe is sowieso een bijzonder heerschap want hij schijnt zonder hulp van buitenaf (lees: trainers) zijn niveau behaald te hebben. Er is dus nog hoop: je kunt tegenwoordig nog GM worden door zelfstudie. Wel moet de Zambiaan nog even een keer goed de FIDE-regels van het schaakspel doornemen, want in zijn partij tegen Hendriks presteerde hij het om in hoge wederzijdse tijdnood tweemaal aan de arbiter te vragen hoeveel zetten hij nog moest doen!

Aan de zoals altijd zeer goede rondeverslagen van Peter Boel heb ik niet veel toe te voegen. Wel kan ik je verklappen dat er ontzettend veel boeiende partijen zijn gespeeld dus klikken op die laatste hyperlink is een aanrader. De PGN-file downloaden kan natuurlijk ook.

De grootste smaakmaker is Vincent Rothuis, die helaas tot dusver niet beloond is voor zijn aantrekkelijke schaak. Het talent schijnt met concentratieproblemen te kampen en besloten te hebben dit jaar niet te spelen in de Meesterklasse. Hopelijk is dit alles van tijdelijke aard.

Waar ik ten slotte nog melding van wil maken is het geweldige initiatief van de organisatie om de spelers van het toernooi een column voor op de website te laten schrijven. Inmiddels is er al iets te vinden van de hand van Willy Hendriks, Puchen Wang, Vincent Rothuis, Nona Gaprindashvili, Helgi Ziska, Fridrik Ólafsson en Bianca Muhren. Onlangs gebeurde iets dergelijks bij het Amerikaans kampioenschap, waar de deelnemers een blog bijhielden. Hopelijk gaan we dit stukje ’schaak-Web 2.0′ in de toekomst nog veel meer zien.

Vandaag spelen Barua en Simutowe tegen elkaar. Als Barua wint, dan wint hij ook het toernooi op onderling resultaat. Livepartijen vanaf 13.00 uur hier.

Tijdens het toernooi is een expositie te bewonderen van Schaakkunst, het project van Margreet Wevers en Geert van Tongeren. Schaakkunst werk met verschillende kunstenaars die het thema schaken in hun werk laten terugkomen. Ze organiseerden hun eerste tentoonstelling in april 2006 en inmiddels zijn ze vaak aanwezig bij schaaktoernooien met schaakkunstwerken, zoals op het Nederlands Kampioenschap en bij het Corus Chess Tournament.

“It will be an interesting cross-pollination between very experienced globetrotters and ambitious youngsters. This tournament formula was inspirired by the important role that was played by the former Dutch world champion Max Euwe as president of the world chess federation FIDE in the seventies, popularizing the game of chess worldwide. Fridrik Olafsson was Euwe’s successor as president of FIDE; Oscar Panno was youth world champion in 1953.

Besides Gaprindashvili, Olafsson and Panno there’s also the young IM’s Helgi Dam Ziska of the Faeröer Islands, Amon Simutowe from Zambia and the 17-year-old champion of New Zealand Puchen Wang. From The Netherlands there’s the 21-year-old WGM Bianca Muhren (runner-up at the Dutch national women’s championship in 2006), IM Willy Hendriks, who will hunt for his 2nd GM norm and the big 17-year-old talent Vincent Rothuis, who will try to gain his 3rd IM norm, and with it the IM title, in Arnhem.”

Later the organizers managed to contract the Indian GM Dibyendu Barua, with an elo of 2468 the strongest player in the international round-robin. But it has become the tournament of Simutowe, who scored his final norm already in the penultimate round. He could have done it a bit more convincingly, which he also admitted himself. In the 7th round he was lucky when he beat Bianca Muhren in a drawn rook ending and he should have lost yesterday’s game that ended in a draw. Well, anyway, the result is there and it’s a great achievement.

In any case Simutowe is a remarkable person because he’s said to have reached this level without any external help (trainers that is). So there’s still hope: these days you can still become a GM by self-study. But the Zambian should start learning the FIDE Rules of Chess properly, because in his game against Hendriks he managed to ask the arbiter, in mutual timetrouble, how many more moves he had to make!

The biggest entertainer is Vincent Rothuis, who wasn’t rewared at all for his attractive chess thus far. This talented boy is said to deal with concentration problems and to have decided not to play in the Dutch League the coming season, as was mentioned on the Dutch forum Utrechtschaak this week. Hopefully all this is temporary.

The last thing I want to mention is the great initiative of the organizers to invite the participants to write a column for the tournament website. So far Willy Hendriks, Puchen Wang, Vincent Rothuis, Nona Gaprindashvili, Helgi Ziska, Fridrik Ólafsson and Bianca Muhren have written something already. Recently something similar was done on the website of the US Championship, where some of the participants were blogging about their tournament. Hopefully we will see this kind of “chess Web 2.0″ a lot more in the future.

During the tournament there’s also an exhibition of Schaakkunst, the project of Margreet Wevers and Geert van Tongeren (schaak=chess and kunst=art). Schaakkunst made contact with several artists who use the theme chess in their work. They organized their first exhibition in April 2006 and now they are often present at chess tournaments works of chess-art, e.g. during the Dutch Championship and at the Corus Chess Tournament.
