Carlsen & Anand win - comments

21 February 2008 8:31 AM | Last modified: 12:54

In the fifth round Topalov lost again, this time to Carlsen (who played the Alekhine!). Leko had a good position against Anand but eventually lost it. Aronian-Shirov and Radjabov-Ivanchuk ended in a draw.

Photos: Macauley.

Two things make the start of Morelia/Linares special: there have been many Black victories (6 of the 20 games, to 5 White victories) and besides, (actually already after 4 rounds) everybody has already lost a game!

Topalov - Carlsen 0-1
Leko - Anand 0-1 0-1
Radjabov - Ivanchuk ½-½
Aronian - Shirov ½-½

Here the games with comments:

Topalov plays g5, and Carlsen responding Ke5?!
Seems like Rook takes Bishop more convincing to me

The analysis of Leko-Anand has been updated, because someone pointed out to me that Leko missed a great chance with 34.Rc8! which might have been winning. This move was also mentioned at ChessPro.
