Rowson kept his lead till the end and so he became the winner of the 2nd Chess Festival Capo d’Orso. We have a video with impressions of this in many ways beautiful event.[/lang_en]
[/lang_nl][lang_en]Before we say more, first the video – which actually says enough.

tegen Naumkin de winst opeisen.[/lang_nl][lang_en]Here’s the crucial game from round 8. Korneev was a point behind Rowson and so he had to win. The tournament leader chose a very old line in the Closed Ruy Lopez with Black, which is treated in the book A Spanish Repertoire for Black by Mihail Marin, who was playing a few boards further down!

It was a heroic fight in which Korneev took many risks but eventually had to accept Rowson’s draw offer. Then the Scotchman clinched the title easily with a quick draw against Naumkin in the last round.[/lang_en]

Het heet What is it like to be a chess grandmaster?

GM Jonathan Rowson at the board…
For everyone who hasn’t had enough of Rowson yet, I gladly refer to a lecture he gave last year at an international congress about thinking, held in Norkkoping, Sweden. It’s called What is it like to be a chess grandmaster?

GM Oleg Korneev at the board…

…the very friendly Russian grandmaster finished second

And here we have IM Bruno Fabio, who finished third and scored his second GM norm!

British Champion GM Jacob Aagaard didn’t have his best result ever, but hey, what else can you do than smile when you came to Sardinia with your wife and your lovely four-months-old baby-girl?

GM Tiger Hillarp Persson – his great lecture will be published later this week![/lang_en]

Rowsons voorsprong kwam meer in gevaar …
Wellicht ertussen?
Anybody get everything Rowson said?
I missed some stutff about:
- what was that about family tournament – family members not allowed? some of that was garbled for me.
- what was that about the tournament being a victim of its own success? I also missed some of that.
Thanks to anybody who can clear it up for me!

@Jean Michel
I have your same listening comprehensin problems. I’ve transcribed what I could hear, hoping a genuine UK reader (or maybe Jonathan himself?) will correct my mistakes.
“This is a great pleasure, thank you very much for your long applause, and thank you for being a part of these [all] warm days.
Playing this tournament has always been a pleasure because is one of the friendliest and most intimate tournaments that I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve played.
[I told Yuri] that this year I probably wouldn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t be able to play and Yuri said that he was very disappointed because this tournament is like building a sense of family and we?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re sad when family members couldn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t come, and after that I thought I had to be here. Because although it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s clearly chess what brings us together, what I love about tourney like this is that chess is not the only thing that we enjoy and share. And I believe it calls upon me the chance to thank the resort?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Stefano and Alessandra, the arbiters and I think a few others, but certainly Yuri who has organized, you know, spent some months of his life making this tournament happen, making it a great success and adding that touch of personal grabbing taste that makes the warm vibrant and [???] event that it is. So thank you Yuri.
One last think, the only problem of this tournament is the danger of being a victim of his own success and therefore, although I very much hope I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll be back next year and I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m sure many of you will be back next year, and I hope this tournament will go on according to these friendly standards in future years.”
Congrats, Peter! This video is excellent and it efficiently captures most of this event’s athmosphere. Great job!
Thanks. Due to some technical problems in Sardinia, the video was presented with a wrong aspect ratio. It’s good now (widescreen)!
Well done, Peter, I was actually wondering why it wasn’t widescreen.
Btw, a special thank for the De Andre’ song. He’s one of the best and most missed Italian singer-songwriters.
[ehm just noticed Jonathan at the beginning says "...and thank Sardinia for at least some warm days". I must be deaf]
Hi Peter, just saw the video again and it’s a really good job- you are setting high standards for a new art form!
Anybody wondering about the content of the speech should keep in mind that when speaking publically in italy, you have to pause after every 3-4 sentences for the translation, and Peter has to edit that out so the pace and tempo of the recordings might sometimes mean that some of the implicit/contextual meaning is lost.
For my part, I probably shouldn’t have said that line about the tournament being a victim of its own success, becuase it gives a negative impression- what I reallly meant to say is that everybody who goes there wants to go back, and usually wants to bring their friends and family too! (so sooner of later the tournament will have to find a way to accommodate the new demand.)
Keep up the good work!
Jonathan.
Thank you Peter. Your video is fantastic!!!!! What else?
ciao
Hi Peter,
congratulation 4 the video, nice images and beautifull music, it bring my mind back there…………….c u next year
Ciao Janis !!!!!!
Peter,
although an organizer is always proud of whatever relates to his “creature”, I must admit that I am simply moved every time I come across your video (and I do so very often, as I show it to all my friends!). I am so glad that our little Sardinian tournament has inspired one of your best videos ever that I cannot but publicly invite you back in 2009…
More so, I should recommend all serious organizers to take real interest in Peter’s excellent work: he is really the best value for your money – guaranteed!
Lastly, I don’t know if this is really an improvement on what Janis already picked up, but here is my understanding of Jonathan’s speech:
“This is a great pleasure, thank you very much for your warm applause, and thank you Sardinia for at least some warm days.
As always this tournament is a pleasure because it is one of the friendliest and most intimate tournaments that I play in.
Earlier this year I thought that I probably wouldn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t be able to play and Yuri said that he was very disappointed because this tournament was about building a sense of family and he was sad when family members couldn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t come, and after that I thought I had to play.
Because although it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s clear that chess is what brings us together, what’s lovely about a tournament like this is that chess is not the only thing that we enjoy and share. And I believe it calls upon me to take this chance to thank the resort – Stefano and Alessandra- the arbiters and I think a few others, but certainly Yuri who has organized, you know, spent several months of his life making this tournament happen, making it a great success and adding that touch of personal gravitas that makes the warm vibrant and colourful event that it is. So thank you Yuri.
One last thing: the only problem of this tournament is that there is a danger of being a victim of his own success and therefore, although I very much hope I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll be back next year and I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m sure many of you will be back next year, and I hope this tournament will go from strength to strength and that everyone wil go on supporting it in the future years.?¢‚Ǩ?
Arrivederci a Porto Mannu 2009!
OK, I guess it’s my turn then.
Thank you Yuri, Stefano, and all the others that have contributed to a warm, personal and at the same time very professionally organized 2. Festival Capo d’Orso. I guess recommending this tournament to all chess fans is something I already did… And normally speaking I’d be glad to return to Sardinia next year!
