Strong start by Ivanchuk on Cuba

[lang_nl]Vassily Ivanchuk toont tot nu toe zijn klasse bij het Capablanca Memorial dat deze week in Havanna gehouden wordt. In de dubbelrondige zeskamp met ook Evgeny Bareev, Kamil Miton, Jesus Nogueiras, Lenier Dominguez en Lazaro Bruzon staat hij na 4 ronde bovenaan met 3,5 punt.[/lang_nl][lang_en]Vassily Ivanchuk is showing his class at the Capablanca Memorial, taking place this week in Havana. In the 6 player double round robin with also Evgeny Bareev, Kamil Miton, Jesus Nogueiras, Lenier Dominguez and Lazaro Bruzon he tops the field with 3,5 points after 4 rounds.[/lang_en]

[lang_nl]Het Capablanca Memorial wordt normaal in het voorjaar gehouden, maar vanwege de Olympiade in Turijn vindt het nu van 19 tot 30 november plaats in hotel Habana Riviera in de Cubaanse hoofdstad.

Ivanchuks partij uit tweede ronde kon hij leuk afmaken. Tegenstander Jesus Nogueiras was op het laatste nippertje op komen draven om Ruben Felgaer te vervangen, die (net als Morozevich bij Corus) om persoonlijke redenen had afgezegd.

Nogueiras is een ervaren speler die het wel een beetje kan; hij versloeg meteen Bareev in de eerste ronde. Ivanchuk was een maatje te groot.

Ivanchuk’s second round game had a nice finish. His opponent, Jesus Nogueiras, had entered the tournament at the last minute after Ruben Felgaer had cancelled his participation because of personal reasons (like Morozevich at Corus).

Nogueiras is an experienced player who can play some chess; in the first round he immediately beat Bareev. Ivanchuk was a bit too strong however.
