Today, after 23 days of the World Cup, it’s now all decided: Gata Kamsky has just drawn the last game of the final against Alexei Shirov and thus he won the match 2.5-1.5. The player from Brooklyn, New York, who emigrated to the US a long time ago and who, after a long break in his chess career, fought himself back into the absolute world elite, and has now won the Cup, 120.000 USD and the right to challenge Veselin Topalov. Truly a wonderful result by the man who was in fantastic shape throughout the whole tournament. Shirov, who can also look back at a really great tournament, goes home with 80,000 USD, a bunch of rating points (just like Kamsky) and probably the desire to go on a long vacation now. The fans favoured him, but again, Caïssa didn’t grant him a match.[/lang_en]

[/lang_nl][lang_en]In the first three rounds, Kamsky beat Ahmed Adly, Boris Avrukh and Kiril Georgiev, all with the score 1.5-0.5. Then he drew his mini-match against Peter Svidler, to beat the Russian 1.5-0.5 in the rapids. In the quarterfinals Ponomariov was Kamsky’s victim, and the semifinals it was the end for Carlsen, both losing 1.5-0,5 against Kamsky. Shirov went down 2,5-1,5 in the four-game final, and so Kamsky didn’t lose once in his sixteen regular and two rapid games!

¡Felicitaciones a Kamsky! Gran torneo y saludos para Shirov que tb. lo ha hecho bien. Pronto la partida en castellano en mi web.

    Congratulations for your covering!

“and the right to challenge Veselin Topalov”

I guess that’s true, but it looks funny, challenging some former champion. Shouldn’t it be “Topalov has the right to challenge the winner of the World Cup”?

    I agree with Pieter.
The WorldCup-winner is close to challenging the WorldChampion, but finds Topalov on his path first.

I predicted after quarter finals that Kamsky would win world cup. (see chessvibes comments)

    Reasons:
    –Great player in tactics
    –Very deep strategic understanding
    –Original player in the opening
    –Experienced
–He is highly motivated after his long abscence (thirsty for chess)
    –and above all fantastic nerves!

whatch out for him in the future!

Hello people, where’s the enthusiasm? An American just won the world cup!! Call the President, call the Mayor, call the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders! This young man is well on the way to the world title, quite impressively, and we’re all acting like impartial spectators, analysts and commentators. Not just here but on every chess site I visit. This is the WORLD CUP people! One of our own just WON it!! Yes, he’s a bit of an odd duck, but if you’re passionate enough about chess to be reading or posting here, then you’re probably an odd duck too. Let’s hear some quacking out there! He’s OUR BOY from Brooklyn. Whoo HOOOO!!!! GO KAMSKY!!!! That was some BEAUTIFUL CHESS you just played…. YOU ROCK THE WORLD!!! Quack Quack KUACK!!!

PS — fantastic coverage, Peter. You just won me over from ChessBase.

  8. Felix on December 16th, 2007 17.56

Indeed, nice coverage. Thumbs up :)

  9. Valéria on December 16th, 2007 18.25

Great coverage here. I loved it.

@KingFaisal, you seem happier with your own prediction than with Kamsky’s result ;-)

  11. Bert de Bruut on December 17th, 2007 0.45

@KingFaisal, you forgot to mention the main reason Kamsky won: his excellent cavalery manoeuvres, particularly during the last two matches!

  12. Felix on December 17th, 2007 17.31

Whe I read the first version I missed photos, but you seem to know what the fans want! :)

Btw., it’s a shame that such an event takes place in Siberia, no spectators, no chessvibes videos (those videos from the organizers are not in “chessvibes quality”),… looking forward to corus :)

  13. Frank on December 18th, 2007 1.28

Nice reports. A shame that this tournament is held in Siberia. the picture of the lonely observer in the empty supporters tribune says it all, move these tournaments to the populated world!

During the world championship in Mexico Nakamura was on ICC commenting on the games from time to time. During this at some point he said that the best player in the US was he or Kamsky depending on the day. How do you feel about this statement? Does anyone here feel, as I do, that Nakamura has the potential in the coming years to eclipse Kamsky’s achievements?

  15. King Faisal on December 18th, 2007 9.30

Arne, you are probably right, my heart was beating for Shirov, his style is for sure more attractive!

  16. King Faisal on December 18th, 2007 9.32

Bert, you are right, I forgot his knight manoeuvres! :-)

  17. Lajos Arpad on December 18th, 2007 18.19

Durango Chess: Probably the sites werent’t american.
