Vandaag, na 23 dagen World Cup, is eindelijk de beslissing gevallen: Gata Kamsky heeft zojuist de laatste finalepartij tegen Alexei Shirov remise gespeeld en daarmee de match met 2,5-1,5 gewonnen. De lang geleden naar Amerka geëimigreerde Rus, die na een grote pauze in zijn carrière zich in een paar jaar tijd heeft teruggevochten naar de absolute wereldtop, won de wereldbeker, 120.000 dollar en het recht om Veselin Topalov uit te dagen. Absoluut een geweldige prestatie van de man die buitengewoon consistent het hele toernooi lang in grootse vorm was. Shirov, die eveneens kan terugkijken op een prachtig toernooi, gaat naar huis met 80,000 USD, een zwik ratingpunten (net als Kamsky) en waarschijnlijk de wens om lekker lang op vakantie te gaan. Today, after 23 days of the World Cup, it’s now all decided: Gata Kamsky has just drawn the last game of the final against Alexei Shirov and thus he won the match 2.5-1.5. The player from Brooklyn, New York, who emigrated to the US a long time ago and who, after a long break in his chess career, fought himself back into the absolute world elite, and has now won the Cup, 120.000 USD and the right to challenge Veselin Topalov. Truly a wonderful result by the man who was in fantastic shape throughout the whole tournament. Shirov, who can also look back at a really great tournament, goes home with 80,000 USD, a bunch of rating points (just like Kamsky) and probably the desire to go on a long vacation now. The fans favoured him, but again, Caïssa didn’t grant him a match.[/lang_en]

Toen speelde hij zijn mini-match tegen Peter Svidler met 1-1 gelijk, om de Rus vervolgens met 1,5-0,5 in de rapids te verslaan. In de kwartfinales was Ponomariov Kamsky’s slachtoffer en de halve finale betekende het einde voor Carlsen; beiden verloren 1,5-0,5 van Kamsky. Shirov ging met 2,5-1,5 ten onder in de finale van vier partijen en zo verloor Kamsky geen enkele van zijn zestien reguliere partijen en twee rapidpartijen!

Then he drew his mini-match against Peter Svidler, to beat the Russian 1.5-0.5 in the rapids. In the quarterfinals Ponomariov was Kamsky’s victim, and the semifinals it was the end for Carlsen, both losing 1.5-0,5 against Kamsky. Shirov went down 2,5-1,5 in the four-game final, and so Kamsky didn’t lose once in his sixteen regular and two rapid games!

I guess that’s true, but it looks funny, challenging some former champion. Shouldn’t it be “Topalov has the right to challenge the winner of the World Cup”?
I agree with Pieter.
The WorldCup-winner is close to challenging the WorldChampion, but finds Topalov on his path first.
I predicted after quarter finals that Kamsky would win world cup. (see chessvibes comments)
Reasons:

–Very deep strategic understanding
–Original player in the opening
–Experienced
–He is highly motivated after his long abscence (thirsty for chess)
–and above all fantastic nerves!

Hello people, where’s the enthusiasm? An American just won the world cup!! Call the President, call the Mayor, call the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders! This young man is well on the way to the world title, quite impressively, and we’re all acting like impartial spectators, analysts and commentators. Not just here but on every chess site I visit. This is the WORLD CUP people! One of our own just WON it!! Yes, he’s a bit of an odd duck, but if you’re passionate enough about chess to be reading or posting here, then you’re probably an odd duck too. Let’s hear some quacking out there! Nice reports. A shame that this tournament is held in Siberia. the picture of the lonely observer in the empty supporters tribune says it all, move these tournaments to the populated world!
During the world championship in Mexico Nakamura was on ICC commenting on the games from time to time. During this at some point he said that the best player in the US was he or Kamsky depending on the day. How do you feel about this statement? Does anyone here feel, as I do, that Nakamura has the potential in the coming years to eclipse Kamsky’s achievements?
