Is it allowed to castle or not?

Yes, in studies castling is allowed if it's a legal move - unless it's made explicitely clear that it's not allowed.

Only reasonable to me seems 1.Bd6+ Bf4 2. Bxf4+ Kxf4 Black will win two pawns.

I guess 3.0-0-0 is best, cuts off the black king. But is it enough? Not the suprising finale one hopes for in a study.

The move, though not particularly flashy, is beautiful in its ruthless effectiveness. Clearly Ra3 or Bd6 is forced, but how does white trade off material without losing a few pawns?

If castling is aloud i think this one is easy. I agree with Willem's solution. But are we missing something? The weekly endgame puzzle is never this easy.
